In this workshop, Jennifer Allen will show you how to create interesting forms using single-pointed and double-pointed darting methods on both wheel-thrown and handbuilt forms. In addition, she’ll cover how to finish those forms with a variety of decorating techniques – from greenware through the bisque stage!

Attendees will learn how to…

 

  • use the double-pointed darted technique on a thrown pitcher form
  • make a vase using the single-pointed darting technique on a bottomless cylinder
  • add “lattice” top and slab spouts to create a tulip vase
  • make a lid for a butter dish using the single-pointed darting technique
  • use bisque drape molds to create butter dish
  • use a handheld extruder to create coil feet
  • make slab-constructed spouts
  • use the mishima slip inlay technique
  • decorate with slip trailing, brushing, and pouring
  • carve around slip to add detail
  • paint with underglazes
  • decorate with glaze trailing and slip/glaze/underglaze/stain inlay
  • decorate with wax resist
  • and more!

ABOUT JENNIFER ALLEN

 

Jennifer received her BFA from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2002, and an MFA from Indiana University in 2006. In addition to her formal education, she worked full time as a studio assistant for Bliss Pottery (1998-2002) in Anchorage. Jennifer also studied ceramics at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Crafts as a post-baccalaureate student.

 

 

Among her achievements, Jennifer was awarded the 2006-2007 Taunt Fellowship at the Archie Bray Foundation, was recognized as an emerging artist at the 2008 NCECA Conference and was named the 2008 Myer Fellow Resident Artist at West Virginia University. Jennifer exhibits her work internationally and nationally. In addition to exhibitions and gallery representation, her work is showcased in several collections worldwide. She currently teaches ceramics part time at West Virginia University.
