Slip trailing is a fabulous technique for creating both visual and tactile decoration on pottery and ceramic sculpture. Most of the time, this technique involves trailing a design in slip onto a pot. In addition to slip trailing in the traditional way, Lisa Orr makes sweet little swirly patterns on cloth, lets them stiffen up, and then uses them to make fancy handles for the teeny tiny salt scoopers on her salt centerpieces.

In today’s video, an excerpt from Layered Surfaces (which is now shipping!), Erin Furimsky slip trails some patterns on a piece, then paints a couple of layers of different colored underglazes on top. After everything dries to bone dry, she sands and scrapes away at the layers creating an effect similar in appearance to weathered and worn layered paint. And it is gorgeous. Check it out!

When many potters or ceramic artists think of slip, they think of it as the “glue” that is used to attach one piece of clay to another. But slip is one of those ceramic items that has many different functions – from slipping and scoring, to slip casting forms to decorating, slip is an essential tool for the pottery studio.
There is no shortage of application techniques using ceramic underglazes. Laura Kukkee creates her decoration with underglazes on newspaper then transfers it to a freshly rolled clay slab. She also builds up layers of different colored slips and underglaze decoration on newsprint to create a very thin slab. Then she cuts the slab into pieces and uses an appliqué technique to apply the decorated pieces to pots. She also demonstrates silk screened and inlaid appliqué.
