Pottery Video of the Week: Design Techniques and Tips for Outstanding Majolica Pottery
I think everyone who has a passion for making pottery has experienced the heartbreak of making a great pot and then ruining it in the glaze stage. I certainly have. In fact, I think glazing and decorating is the most challenging part of this medium. So today I am sharing this video clip from Linda Arbuckle’s Majolica DVD. Not only does Linda give excellent advice and show examples for how to develop successful decoration. But she also shares a number of great technical tips for painting with majolica colors. Though this clip was condensed quite a bit for web posting, I still think it is packed with great information.
Decorating Techniques and Troubleshooting Tips for Majolica
After pursuing multiple careers that stifled her creative voice, Janice Strawder decided to go back to school for ceramics. While in school, she met Linda Arbuckle, who generously shared her vast majolica knowledge. From then on she was a convert. Enamored with the majolica technique for its simple lines and deliberate, repetitive brushstrokes, Janice has been honing the technique ever since. In today’s post, an excerpt from the November/December 2012 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated, Janice shares her majolica knowledge, just as Linda did for her.

Video of the Week: How to Flocculate a Ceramic Glaze for Better Coverage
In majolica glazing an even coat of the base glaze is desirable because it acts as a canvas for the decoration. In today’s post, an excerpt from her DVD Majolica Glazing: Creating Colorful Surfaces, Linda Arbuckle explains how she tests her glazes and makes sure they are properly flocculated to ensure even coverage. Even if you do not do majolica, this advice can be helpful in other glazing situations.
The Colorful World of Majolica: A Beautiful Low-Fire Pottery Glazing Technique
Our summer of DVD filming continues and, in a couple of weeks, Linda Arbuckle will be coming to town to share her vast knowledge of the majolica (maiolica) technique on an instructional video. If you’re unfamiliar with majolica, it is a type of decoration typically done on terra cotta, with opaque white glaze and colored overglaze decoration. Linda is an expert on the majolica subject, and shared her knowledge in the written form in the latest issue of Ceramics Monthly. Today, I am presenting an excerpt from that article and in the next couple of months, her instructional DVD will hit the shelves of the Ceramic Arts Daily Bookstore. Stay tuned!

We do a lot of thinking about and talking about the romantic side of being a potter—even those of us who are professional potters must reflect from time to time on how their days just don’t seem to reflect that same rosy story that was the original motivation for working in clay. —Sherman Hall, Editor
Messing With Majolica: An Instructor Shares Tips for Learning and Teaching the Majolica Technique
In today’s post, an excerpt from the May/June issue of Pottery Making Illustrated, Jake Allee shares what he learned when he recently delved into the Majolica technique. I really like the advice he gives on experimenting in your work. This may be just the impetus I needed to start some majolica experiments myself.
