We have a great video for you today, but first I have some exciting news to share. This weekend, we will be launching a new and improved version of the Ceramic Arts Daily website. On the new site, you should notice a new look, better functionality, easier navigation, and the great content you have come to expect from Ceramic Arts Daily. We will continue to develop and add to this new site, so you can expect even better things in the future. As with any new website launch, there may be some glitches in the transitional days. Please bear with us during this period. If you notice any problems, please let us know and we will get them fixed as soon as possible. We hope you like our new digs! – Jennifer Harnetty, editor.
And now, for today’s video, Mitch Lyons returns to share some great ideas for decorating pottery with colored slips. Enjoy!
This clip was excerpted from the full-length DVD Handbuilding with Mitch Lyons, which is available in the Ceramic Arts Daily Bookstore.

Would underglazes work for this technique? I am a teacher and that is what I have available…

After watching the video several times, I tried this. I used white stoneware clay slip instead of porcelain as that was what I had on hand. I painted the slip onto newspaper; let it dry some; then rolled it onto my white stoneware clay slab. The newsprint separated and I had a layer of paper attached to the slip on my slab. Also the newspaper wrinkled and I had visible wrinkles instead of a solid color. Also, Would love to know what red stain he used. Mine (using two spoonfuls to 1/4 cup slip was barely pink. Help. It looked so wonderful and seemed to work so well for him. Was considering ordering his book, but now am wondering if it would really be that helpful since this attempt has been such a failure. Thanks for any tips.

It is a nice and wonderful technique for decorating pottery. I agree with Brenda… where can we see the finished product?

Hi, very interesting to see these techniques. I would feel more inclined to purchase had I been able to see the end result. Thanks

Hi Sandeep, Mitch uses newsprint (what newspapers are printed on) for this. he actually gets scrap paper from his local newspaper.

What is the material Mitch uses to work on. The clay doesn’t seem to stick to it. He may have stated it in the video but I didn’t hear it since the volume was down.

I have been experimenting with this process and am very excited. I have been trying to draw lines through the paper to make stripes like Mitch did but so far it hasn’t worked… I keep getting large areas instead of lines. Has anyone done this and can you suggest where I might be going wrong… I bought the video but am waiting for it to arrive…

I am really jazzed about this.. yes it would have been nice to finished piece but I can’t wait to try these techniques.. Please can you tell me about the “organic” coloring added to see what the fired color is going to look like?
