Mud Dauber Pottery is located just northwest of Charlottesville, Virginia. From Highway 29, turn west on Airport Road. Go three quarters of the way around the rotary to take a right off of the rotary onto Dickerson Road. At the next intersection, take the first right off the rotary onto Earlysville Road. Continue for about one mile. Mud Dauber Pottery is on the right, just across from the Earlysville Animal Hospital.

Studio Description:

I make wheel thrown stoneware vessels and hand built stoneware tiles with a botanical motif. My work is inspired by the graphics and architecture of the American Arts and Crafts movement, by the illustrations of fractal geometry, and by my family’s long involvement in land conservation and botony. Each vessel is thrown on the wheel, then impressed with a real botanical specimen, then painted with a porcelain slip. I decorate the rims and bases with a tightly structured point pattern. The botancal sections of each piece are glazed with high gloss transluscent celadons in green, blue or amber, and the textured portion of each pot is left with a earthy red iron oxide wash. I fire in a hand-built 60 cubic foot sprung-arch downdraft kiln using propane to cone 7 in reduction. I employ one part time studio assistant who mixes glazes, rolls tiles, and does all of the odds and ends of studio practice that help free my time up for throwing. My studio is located in an 1890s warehouse, and the gallery is in the accompanying log cabin (now covered by cedar shakes). I welcome visitors. Please call ahead of time to make sure we’ll be open–our hours are variable.
