Studio Description:
Rayne Maker Pottery, featuring the work of Julia Rayne Schumacher, is a clay art business located in the beautiful mountain town of Canmore, Alberta. Julia uses a variety of hand building, wheel throwing, mold making and slip casting in order to create functional pots, decorative flower vases/sculptures, and custom products. Through her creation of functional pots and decorative sculptures, Julia hopes to inspire, in the lives of others, an intimate affection for their personal surroundings.

After receiving her 2 year diploma from the art department of Red Deer College, Julia continued on to complete her BFA at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, AB. She also participated in the mobility/exchange program in her third year, which sent her to Canberra Australia for one semester. After graduating in 2006, Julia became the Art Studio Technician at Red Deer College and in the evenings she taught pottery for the City of Red Deer Cultural Services.

Her working studio is located in the Elk Run industrial area of Canmore at “Of Cabbages and Kings Pottery Studio” where she shares a very inspiring space with the father/daughter team John and Katie Borrowman. Julia has been potting full-time at of Cabbages and Kings since April 2009.

The clay used is a high-fire mix of porcelain and stoneware fired in oxidation to cone 9 (2300 degrees Fahrenheit). Julia mixes all glazes from raw materials and develops her own distinctive glaze recipes. All functional Rayne Maker Pottery products are durable and safe for food, microwaves, dishwashers and ovens.
