Artist Statement: Over the past twelve years, I have been creating a body of ceramic art work that has become nationally and internationally recognized, exhibited and sold. My signature work is that of the whimsical teapot. My teapots are completely functional with lid, handle and spout, yet my main interest is in developing the unique artistry of each individual piece.
I use a variety of techniques to create my teapots. I throw on the wheel, hand-build, carve, create press molds, slip cast molds, I photo silkscreen on clay, I airbrush glazes onto clay, I use China paint techniques and an ancient technique called lace draping.
I want to stay open to new ideas and new inventions. When in my studio I like to play, experiment, explore, wonder, push the envelope. I donʼt mind making a mess, getting nowhere, getting frustrated, ponder mistakes and end up somewhere I didnʼt expect to be with my art. I like surprise, adventure, exploration and experimentation. I want to use old techniques in new ways. Product has never been as important to me as insight, growth and learning something new each time I create. |
