Artist Statement: There is no denying that women throughout history have been influenced by society and cultural ideals. The combination of innate human desire to be “attractive” along with social and cultural influences has caused the corset to become an item of eroticism and controversy, even to this day. Deriving inspiration from corsets (from Victorian era to modern day) and textile patterns, I create vases of beauty that subtly hint at pain, at bondage and sensuality, and at sexual oppression and at the same time freedom. The corset, in all its beauty, is a complex social cultural thing. By creating these “corset” vases, I hope the viewer can begin to understand the complexity of the corset, the beauty, the pain, the desire to be attractive, the sexual liberation in wearing one, and the simultaneous oppression in doing so.
