Introduced to ceramics in high school in Australia, Dan later apprenticed with a painter/sculptor in Bangalore, India while pursuing his undergraduate degree in comparative religion, anthropology, and languages. With subsequent experiences studying ceramics in Japan and Jerusalem, he worked in a ceramics studio while studying at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. He continued to make and instruct in ceramics while pursuing a PhD in French & Arabic literature at UC Berkeley, and then taught Arabic in Ithaca, NY alongside teaching classes in the Cornell University Pottery Studio. In 2007 he started an 18-months in residency at the Cub Creek Foundation in Virginia, followed by 3 years as Chris Gustin’s studio manager, and residencies at Watershed, Guldagergaard, and Vallauris. Lyricism of music, languages, and the Arabic script find their way into my work by the sheer fact that they are and were an inseparable part of my everyday life. I use the vessel as a metaphor for the psychological body and approach sculpture as a 3-D canvas to reconfigure, redirect, and redistribute space. Design elements behind architectural detail speak of function, functions that tell us a lot about ourselves, the lines we choose, how we allow light in, how we view the outside from the inside, how we overcome obstacles with bridges, stairways, corridors, cordons and thruways. My interest is to engage unfamiliar dilemmas that lie latent within our relationships to traditional and figurative form. For now, I seek to invite a third option amid the duality of internal and external space, where the two meet to play in a space that implies a new, more meditative function. What I’m looking for is that quiet transition where the doubts of opposites abide. A metaphor for horizons, not for day and night, but for dawn and dusk.
