I am a maker, a craftsman. I love to immerse my hands in clay and create. My work is mainly wheel thrown utilitarian stoneware, each piece individually and thoughtfully formed. Making unique, well-crafted pieces that are functional yet compel closer examination, a touch and conversation is the sweet spot. This quiet connection between maker and user is what refuels my creative spirit and propels me back to work. I experiment extensively with texturing, adding to and/or removing from clay surfaces in my quest to create a vitality or movement on each piece with pattern and line. I formulate my own glazes to work with and enhance the textures I’ve produced. The final facet is layering the glaze and understanding how the glaze will move, pool and crystallize thus enhancing the piece, crowning it with color. My inspiration for work varies depending on the vessel. My most recent functional work is embellished with a technique of applying and draping clay slip, this action creates beautiful undulating surfaces which are amplified with my glazes. The work consistently evolves through experimentation and trial. I feel fortunate to honor this ancient skill and carry on with “hand-crafted” traditions in this modern “machine made” era.
