Happiness Is A Warm Extruder
In this workshop we’ll explore extrusion and slab techniques as they relate to making functional stoneware. Our approach will be to let the process show in the work, keeping in mind if we keep out of clay’s way, the material will reveal its nature and the results will remain fresh and lively. Myths will be busted and secrets revealed. We’ll work with unconventional forming methods and unusual approaches to surface decoration. This workshop will also be of interest to throwers looking to expand their horizons beyond the wheel.

Participants will learn how to:

• Make full use of the extruder
• Make custom extruder dies
• Cut stencils from Tyvek
• Use liquid latex resist with a deer-tail brush
• Decorate with colored slip inlay
• Work with stretched slabs
• Make tools out of common materials
• Modify existing tools to suit specific needs
  

Additional Information
Hayne Bayless is a studio potter in Ivoryton, CT. Hayne abandoned throwing early on, preferring the freedom of hand-building. Other than lessons from a potter in Tokyo when he was 19, and later a handful of workshops, he managed to avoid any formal instruction in ceramics. Since leaving a perfectly good job at a newspaper in 1992 to make pots, Hayne has exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Show nine times and Minnesota Potters Tour five times. He is represented by AKAR Gallery in Iowa, Ferrin Gallery in Massachusetts, Blue Heron Gallery in Maine, Works Gallery in Philadelphia, and the Crimson Laurel Gallery in North Carolina. His work is published in Design Language by Tim McCreight, Objects for Use: Handmade by Design by Paul Smith, and in Studio Potter magazine. He has taught workshops at Arrowmont, The Bascom, Castle Hill, The Clay Studio, Odyssey, Penland, Peters Valley and Shakerag, and has had three residencies at Watershed, where he is on the advisory board. In the studio he tries to keep in mind the words of sculptor Constantin Brancusi: “Each material has its own life … we must not try to make materials speak our language, we must go with them to the point where others will understand their language.”

Joseph Pintz
Less is More
Join Joseph Pintz as he explores hand-built vessels created through a range of rudimentary additive and reductive handbuilding techniques. Learn how to use simple bisque molds to create a wide array of utilitarian and sculptural forms. The subtleties of form and surface as essential design elements will be covered. Finishes that highlight the rich surface of earthenware such as terra sigillata will also be discussed.

Additional Information
Joseph Pintz’s functional and sculptural ceramic work explores the role that domestic objects play in fulfilling our physical and emotional needs. Inspired by his Midwestern roots, Pintz often recreates hand tools and other seemingly mundane objects. In the process, the dense meaning of these objects is transferred into clay.Pintz earned his BA in anthropology and urban studies at Northwestern University. After graduation, he taught in an inner-city school through Teach for America.  He received his MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also was a resident artist and Lincoln Fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation. In 2009, he received an Emerging Artist award from the National Council in Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). Pintz was awarded an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award for 2011. His work has been shown internationally and he recently joined the faculty at University of Missouri as an Assistant Professor of Art.

SANDI PIERANTOZZI
Flat/Form/Function/Handbuilding Functional Pots
In this workshop we will cover how to hand build functional pots which have good form, function well, and have a sensitivity to the human touch as well as other senses. We will primarily be using soft slabs.

Demonstrations will include forming techniques that use circular and rectangular templates, and the method of making various parts fit together. Through making and combining cylindrical and conical parts, a variety of forms will be shown. Alternate ways of treating the bottom of a pot with regard to added feet or foot rings will be included, as well as various types of handles made from slabs and coils. How to arrive at accurate templates will also be discussed. Good craftsmanship is important, so there will be much attention paid to detail and finishing touches.

Additional Information
Sandi Pierantozzi has been handbuilding pots for 27 years. Her work, which is predominantly slab built, has been featured in Studio Potter, Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times and over a dozen books on clay work. She has presented numerous workshops across the country, and has exhibited her work nationally and abroad. Her work is in both museum and private collections. She was chosen an Emerging Talent at the 1993 NCECA conference and was a featured demonstrator at NCECA in 2001. Her awards include a 2001 Fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Hammill & Gillespie Purchase Award at the 1999 Ceramics Monthly International Ceramics Competition. She and her husband, Neil Patterson, maintain a private studio, Neighborhood Potters, in Philadelphia, PA.

AMY SANDERS
When it Comes to Texture and Pattern, More is More?
Working with cone 6 stoneware, this workshop will focus on soft slab construction while considering how stamped patterns and clay appliqués enhance the surface. Amy will demonstrate how to make several forms using varied building methods with slabs, while focusing on how to create a sense of volume and “breath” in your work.

Some pieces will be created by pinching, folding, and draping thin slabs over bisqued clay molds; while others will start with simple paper templates. Discussion will focus on how pattern, line, texture, and proportion inform composition and aesthetic decisions made while creating a pot.

Details of techniques: Amy works mainly with mid-range stoneware that is stretched into thin soft slabs. These slabs are then stamped to create a pattern or scene and then pinched or folded, stretched and scored together. Some pieces are then draped over a mold, while others start with a simple paper template. Gestural rims and feet, as well as appliqués created from stamps are often added. All pieces are electric kiln fired to cone 6 and surfaces are completed with layered glazes and oxides. Amy will be happy to share her glaze recipes with participants.

Additional Information
Amy first discovered clay as an undergraduate studying biology at Centre College in Danville, KY where she quickly switched majors and graduated with a BA in art and secondary education. She and her husband Brian then moved to Charlotte to work for Habitat for Humanity as Americorps volunteers and happily discovered an amazing clay community in NC. Amy has been teaching throwing and hand building classes at Clayworks Studio in Charlotte for 11 years, and also greatly enjoys teaching workshops. After completing a 1-½ year artist residency at McColl Center for Visual Art, she has been a full time studio artist for 6 years (in between hanging out with her two young boys: Guthrie and Sammy). In 2009, Amy completed a large-scale public art tile project for the city of Charlotte in conjunction with a residency at Garinger High School. Amy’s work is exhibited nationally.
