Ceramics Decorating Video: Decorating Pottery with Colored Slips

by Mitch Lyons Read Comments (11)

We have a great video for you today, but first I have some exciting news to share. This weekend, we will be launching a new and improved version of the Ceramic Arts Daily website. On the new site, you should notice a new look, better functionality, easier navigation, and the great content you have come to expect from Ceramic Arts Daily. We will continue to develop and add to this new site, so you can expect even better things in the future. As with any new website launch, there may be some glitches in the transitional days. Please bear with us during this period. If you notice any problems, please let us know and we will get them fixed as soon as possible. We hope you like our new digs! - Jennifer Harnetty, editor.

And now, for today’s video, Mitch Lyons returns to share some
great ideas for
decorating pottery with colored slips. Enjoy! -

The video was disappointing. It would have been nice to see the final product.

I am really jazzed about this.. yes it would have been nice to finished piece but I can’t wait to try these techniques.. Please can you tell me about the “organic” coloring added to see what the fired color is going to look like?

Tracey- Mitch addresses the organic colorant in more detail in this clip in the CAD archives:

I have been experimenting with this process and am very excited. I have been trying to draw lines through the paper to make stripes like Mitch did but so far it hasn’t worked… I keep getting large areas instead of lines. Has anyone done this and can you suggest where I might be going wrong… I bought the video but am waiting for it to arrive…

What is the material Mitch uses to work on. The clay doesn’t seem to stick to it. He may have stated it in the video but I didn’t hear it since the volume was down.

Hi Sandeep, Mitch uses newsprint (what newspapers are printed on) for this. he actually gets scrap paper from his local newspaper.

Hi, very interesting to see these techniques. I would feel more inclined to purchase had I been able to see the end result. Thanks
