January Focus: A Life in Clay

For many of us, clay is a lifestyle as much as—if not more than—a job. We know it's tough to make a living with clay even in good economic times, and with the downturn in the economy, that hill gets more and more steep all the time. But we also know that a life of creative endeavor has economic feast as well as famine. The three sculptors featured in this month's focus address issues of business, personal motivation, influence, planning  and lifestyle. They have seen the feast and the famine—and they have work through both.

Even if clay is your avocation rather than your vocation, my bet is that it's still a big part of your life—an increasingly more necessary one these days. So get in the studio, make something that makes you happy, and share it with someone.—Sherman Hall, Editor
