sawdust smoking
Cosmetic smoking process where unglazed wares are buried in sawdust in
a brick enclosure or a perforated steel drum.
Sawdust is ignited at the
top and allowed to smoulder down over a period of hours. Often
mistakenly referred to as pit-firing, but does not achieve true firing
temperatures, and wares must be bisque-fired first.
