Saturday and Sunday Presenter Demonstrations

Two full days of demonstrations, hands-on opportunities and information exchange, along with this unforgettable collection of ceramic artists, will make SURFACE, FORM & SUBSTANCE a premier Indianapolis event.  The schedule is set-up so that attendees can pick and choose which classes to attend over the two day event.  Attendees will sign-up during Friday and/or Saturday morning registration. Attendees will be asked to choose one presenter for AM and PM for Saturday and Sunday.  Because this conference includes a large amount of hands-on participation, we will need to ensure that rooms are not overcrowded.

Debra Fritts
The Figures In Clay
Debra will demonstrate a handbuilding technique that combines modeling, pitching and coiling for small figurative sculptures. Conversations on personal imagery and symbolism will be shared. After small sculptures are constructed, surface decoration will be discussed.  Attendees will experiment with slips, underglazes, impressions and mark-making to start a surface on wet clay.

Hands-On: All materials for hands-on work will be provided. Please bring a sketchbook/journal and a small object that has personal meaning to you.

Additional Information:
Debra Fritts is a ceramic artist and accomplished teacher living in Roswell, Georgia.  Her sculptures have been published in numerous books, publications and can be viewed in galleries throughout the US.  Debra works intuitively, expressing the figure through narrative stories based on the mysteries and joys of daily life. Her goal is always to reach the core: the spiritual level of the sculpture. Then the work can speak.

Ovidio Giberga

The Aesthetics of Color in Ceramics
Only recently, relative to the history of ceramics, has glaze technology come so close to offering ceramic artists the opportunity to use color as painters do. Without the equivalent of a color wheel, ceramics developed a vocabulary and aesthetic of color that is unique to the medium. Ovidio’s lecture will examine the phenomena of color in ceramics. He will provide examples of how this aesthetic is informed by ceramic history, technology, culture and environment. He will also look at contemporary and non-traditional approaches to color being used in ceramics today.

Additional Information:
Ovidio Giberga currently heads the Ceramics program at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He earned his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Florida in 1996. Since then, he has been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation, and invited as a visiting assistant professor at New Mexico State University and at Alfred University College of Ceramics. Ovidio’s work is exhibited nationally, and was recently published in the April 2008 issue of Ceramics Monthly magazine.

Susan Kemenyffy
Drawing is Not Decoration
The harmonious relationship between 2D & 3D aspects of clay are intractable. One facet often triumphs, detrimentally, to the well being of the other. "Exquisite Integrity" only comes when balance successfully unites contour with its surface. Beginning in graduate school at the University of Iowa and continuing through the decades, Susan has worked in collaboration with her husband Steven. Susan’s drawings have been, and continue to be, the foundation of her work in all media. Classically trained at Syracuse University, The Art Student’s League in Woodstock, New York and the University of Illinois, Champaign, she will present, demonstrate and discuss her 'Linear & Content’ approach to ‘Clay Partnership’: how does one project individual proclivities - legitimately - beyond the comfort of time-past, into the potential of time-future?

Hands-On: Workshop participants are encouraged to bring examples of their work, in progress or completed, in either 3D clay or 2D ‘other’ forms.

Additional Information:
A recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts / Fellowship Grant, Susan is also Past President of the Erie Art Museum, Erie, Pennsylvania; Chairman Emeritus of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts; and is a Trustee of the Erie Community Foundation. Among others, her work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Cincinnati Art Museum & the International Ceramic Museum, Kecskemet, Hungary. Lecturing in Prague (The Czech Republic), Sao Paolo (Brazil), Wellington (New Zealand) et al, she has just returned from speaking in the United Kingdom where her commissioned essay "Landscape / Drawing’"will be published in Drawing - The Purpose, in 2008.

Eva Kwong
Sensuous Forms & Evocative Surfaces Using Velvets
Ever wonder how to incorporate more color into your artwork? Eva Kwong will lead this hands-on workshop on the use of Velvets and colored slips to energize and enhance your clay forms.
Eva will demonstrate her different slip techniques on greenware. Participants will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with Eva in this fast paced and exciting workshop. This workshop is open to all skill levels.

Hands-On: Focus on the use of Velvets and colored slips to energize and enhance clay forms.

Additional Information:
Eva Kwong is known for her colorful and compelling pots and sculptures based on organic forms.  Her experience working at the Nature Lab at the Rhode Island School of Design as an undergrad and her longtime interest in
looking at nature provides the reference for her use of color and form. Eva has a BFA from RISD and a MFA from Tyler School of Art.

Jeffrey Nichols
Exploration in Color: Uniting Form and Surface
One of the most difficult things to develop in clay is a cohesive integration between form and surface.  This workshop will explore issues on how to create colorful surfaces that enhance form for functional, decorative and sculptural works in clay.  Students will learn to investigate non-ceramic surfaces for inspiration, the importance of experimentation for the development of new ideas and approaches, as well as how to integrate line and form with surface for creating content.  In this workshop, Jeffrey will demonstrate his unique approach to color and surface, giving participants insight into its development and his influences.

Hands-On: Attendees will be provided 2 -3 bisque fired 4" square flat tiles with a medium smooth surface in a red or dark clay body.  Students are also encouraged to bring an example of their work no larger than 4" tall for discussion and possible experimentation with the process (pieces with edges and a medium smooth surface using a red or dark clay body work best).

Additional Information:
Jeffrey Nichols is an artist/educator with over 15 year of experience in the field of ceramics.  Currently a studio potter living and working in Kentucky, Jeffrey exhibits his work both nationally and internationally.  His work ranges from the functional to the decorative to the sculptural and is influenced by a wide array of subjects, specifically 17th century Chinese export porcelain, European palace wares, modernist sculpture and painting, architecture and nature.  Jeffrey strives to incorporate beauty and harmony into his pottery while challenging perceptions of what utilitarian ceramics can be.

Lana Wilson
Innovative Soft Slab Teapot
Unusual construction techniques with textured soft slabs of clay will be used to take twelve parts to make a teapot and a separate stand. Two parts will be used for the handle, spout and lid. Stamps and textures will be demonstrated and other options offered in the hopes of suggesting variations on the teapot and stand demo. Functional or non-functional construction variations will also be covered.

Additional Information:
Lana Wilson, a third generation native Californian,  has given 80 workshops on handbuilding including ones at Arrowmont, Penland, Mendocino Art Center, Metchosin and Peters Valley. She has also taught in Canada, Israel, New Zealand and South Africa and has written a regular column for Clay Times magazine since 1996. Her work has been in over 180 shows and appears in fourteen books including both volumes of The Best of Pottery and Kathy Triplett’s Handbuilt Ceramics and several of Robin Hopper’s books. She is the author of Ceramics: Shape and Surface, which includes extensive cone 6 and cone 04 electric glazes she has developed.  A video “Soft Slab Techniques with Lana Wilson” has been produced on her working techniques and she was a featured demonstrator at 2003 NCECA where a video was also produced on her. She is currently on the board of Craft Emergency Relief Fund. She has appeared twice on the Discovery Channel to extol the delights of working in clay while making a teapot.
