CAROL ROSE DEAN Designing Tile for Installation: Budget, Tile Design and Application Carol, owner of Dean Tile and Design, will share her experiences of designing and installing tile. She will take 3 theoretical “designs” from conception to installation, looking at what each type of installation entails. Carol will show how to plan for the budget, design, and implementation of these types of projects. Using these three hypothetical projects:
- Project 1: Portable project, a mirror frame.
- Project 2: a commission for a private client, vanity top, back-splash and mirror.
- Project 3: a committee based public project that requires fabrication and installation
Attendees will leave this demonstration with a broader understanding of the design/installation process necessary for the completion of projects on a larger scale.
Additional Information: Carol Rose Dean studied Ceramics with Mike Moran at the Evergreen State College where she received a BFA in Ceramic Sculpture, with a minor in Arts Management. She spent 8 years working as a General Contractor, before becoming a Tile Contractor and opening the studio/gallery Dean Tile and Design in 1999. Since then she has taught Tile making workshops, and designed and installed tile for public and private clients in the Puget Sound area. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums throughout the United States. Her work is in public and private collections.

BARBARA BENSON KEITH Introduction to Glass Mosaics In this glass mosaic class, Barbara will demonstrate glass cutting and shaping techniques, methods of application, choices in adhesives and backerboards, and introduce different kinds of glass tessarae and a variety of patterning styles. A broad range of mosaics will be introduced and serve as inspiration for the group mosaics that the attendees will be working on. Attendees will learn the following:
- Cutting techniques: using a rotary scoring cutter and running pliers to score and break glass, using a wheeled nipper to cut smaller pieces.
- Shaping techniques: Using a grinder on the glass as needed.
- Introduce different patterning techniques, photos of inspirations in a Powerpoint show, choices in backer boards, adhesives, and tesserae.
- Participants will learn basic cutting techniques and have the chance to work on a group mosaic during class using their new skills. During the powerpoint presentation, attendees will be introduced to the history of mosaics, different mosaic techniques and be shown a variety of high quality glass mosaics.
Additional Information: Barbara is a self-taught stained glass mosaic artist. She has published two books for children illustrated completely with stained glass mosaics: The Girls and Boys of Mother Goose and Mosaic Zoo: An ABC Book. She is a full time artist and has created several large scale public art mosaics in the last few years.
Hands-on Opportunities: After learning about different materials and seeing a variety of patterning techniques to achieve desired effects, participants will work on a group glass mosaic.

CARRIE ANNE PARKS Taking Tiles to School Based on Carrie Anne’s experience in designing, building and installing ceramic tile murals in school settings, her presentation will cover practical aspects of working with teachers, administrators, school carpenters, parents and students. Seeming constraints such as climate, architectural structures, budgets and academic calendars can also serve as important design criteria that inspire tile projects that fill the special needs of schools and communities for which they are made.
Carrie Anne will demonstrate forming and glazing techniques appropriate for working with students in various grade levels and will discuss installation considerations including mounting, grouting and maintaining tiles. She will also show examples of a number of completed projects.
Additional Information: Carrie Anne began making tiles at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, where she completed a B.F.A. in ceramics and drawing. Following college, she worked as an apprentice to potter Takeo Sudo in Mashiko, Japan. She the earned an M.F.A. with an emphasis in ceramic sculpture, at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.
Since 1982, she has taught at Alma College, Alma, MI, where tile making is a regular part of the 3-d design curriculum. Carrie Anne has often had opportunities to collaborate with her students on tile installations for the College and other area schools. Carrie Anne’s figurative drawings and ceramic sculptures are exhibited nationally and have been included in numerous books on contemporary ceramics. An NEA Regional visual Arts Fellowship in 1994 allowed her to study architectural tile work and sculpture in Italy. Recently, her work has won awards in the Cheongju International Craft Competition in Cheongju, Korea and the Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition in Peoria, IL.

SHEILA MENZIES & JOSEPH TAYLOR Handmade Tiles: The State of the Art, Past and Present Handmade tiles, historically noted for their usefulness throughout the world, have also excelled aesthetically during select periods when social and economic conditions have encouraged the flowering of ceramic arts, the result being a renaissance of productivity and artistic achievement. In the United States decorative tiles have been produced for about 130 years, at first patterned after those in Europe and the Middle East and gradually evolving into a uniquely American product. The initial period of creativity in this country lasted just over 50 years. Interestingly, the current surge of popularity in handmade tiles is fast approaching 50 years as well.
In Part One of our PowerPoint presentation we will trace the origins of U.S. tiles and review the major American tile makers who have stood out for their artistic achievement from the mid 1870s to the the Great Depression. In Part Two of the the presentation, the focus will shift to the evolution of contemporary decorative tile making in the United States with examples of exceptional work from the 1960s to the present. Most of the successful tile makers today have been influenced by their predecessors, and we will we point out these inspirational sources whenever possible.
Attendees will come away from the presentation with a broad knowledge of the history of handmade tiles in the United States, the origins and inspirations behind these historic tiles and the connections with those who are making tiles throughout the country today.
Additional Information: Sheila Menzies and Joseph Taylor co-manage the Tile Heritage Foundation, a member-supported organization for research and preservation of ceramic surfaces established in 1987. Sheila is the coordinator of Tile Heritage educational events as well as a craftsperson, a mixed media artist including mosaic and clay. Joe is a writer and lecturer on tile history; he has focused his research on the evolution of tile manufacturing in California. The two have traveled extensively in North America and Europe documenting historic and contemporary tile installations. Honored with prestigious awards from tile industry groups, they often appear together to deliver presentations drawing from the Foundation’s extensive library and archives.
Sheila has had an affinity with tiles since childhood. Having grown up in Scotland she entertained herself as a child with the beautiful floral tiles surrounding her grandmother’s best room fireplace and later with the “wally closes,” the Victorian art-tiled wainscot entryways in Glasgow. In recent years as a result of her experience with pebble, glass, and ceramic mosaics, she has been asked to serve as a juror for the annual SAMA competitions. Joe left behind a Tiffany tile fireplace when he moved west from his childhood home in Rochester, New York. He was initiated into the world of tiles when he worked as Director of Sales at McIntyre Tile Company in Healdsburg, California from 1973 to 1985. He has been a principal contributor to More About Malibu Potteries 1926-1932; Catalina Tile of the Magic Isle; The Arts and Crafts Movement in California: Living the Good Life; Batchelder Tilemaker; California Tile: The Golden Era 1910-1940; and most recently Motawi Tileworks.
