Presenters

Lorna Meaden
Thrown, Altered and Decorated
Lorna’s presentation will address ways to create pots that have a generous sense of volume and fluidity of line, using wheel thrown and altered porcelain. Her vocabulary of forms range from pots for daily use to atypical forms such as watering cans and spoons. Demonstrations will include altering pots on and off the wheel, in addition to using drawn patterns to handbuild spouts and handles. The pots will then be decorated using the slip inlay technique called mishima. You will learn the following:

  • Creating wheel thrown and altered porcelain pots that have volume and fluidity of line
  • Altering of pots on and off the wheel
  • Using drawn patterns to handbuild spouts and handles
  • Decorating using a slip inlay technique called Mishima
  • Making a scoop, a spoon or ladle

Additional Information:
Lorna Meaden grew up in the western suburb of Chicago, La Grange. After receiving a B.A. from Fort Lewis College in 1994, she established a studio in Durango, Colorado where she worked as a studio potter for the next eight years. She received an MFA in ceramics from Ohio University in June of 2005. She has recently been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana, and at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Lorna received the “Best of Show” award for the Strictly Functional Pottery National in 2006. Her work is represented by the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Art, Charlie Cummings Clay Studio, The Clay Studio of Philadelphia, Harvey Meadows Gallery, Ferrin Gallery, Lill Street Art Center, and the Red Lodge Clay Center. She is currently a studio potter in Durango, Colorado.

Hands-on Opportunities: Participants in the hands on portion of the workshop will make a scoop, a spoon, or a ladle, or…one of each! The techniques used to make the spoons will include throwing on the wheel, darting, and building a handle from a pattern and a slab. We will then decorate the spoons and scoops using slip inlay.
