How much ash is too much ash
Posted 14 Jul 2012
I am experimenting with sieved (not washed) wood stove ash. I am attempting to get a little rim action in my glazes. Someone suggested that I dip my just glazed rims into sieved ash and the damp glaze would cause the ash to cling. Well cling it did and now I am wondering how much is too much! My instincts told me to knock some off, which I have done, but before I fire I wonder if anyone has tried this before and how much ash is too much.
I have put all the dipped pots on one shelf so if I have any "run off" it will only trash one shelf. There is just something unappealing about grinding shelves in 90+ temps. -
Guns
Posted 8 Jul 2012
Glazing is my least favorite part of the process. I should be firing in salt/soda/wood but oxidation/electric is what it is, so I need to make the best of it. I'm thinking I should try spraying my glazes and therefore am on the hunt to arm myself with the perfect gun. I did a cursory search of the archives and didn't have anything pop up so I thought I would ask what types of spray guns people have used to glazing and their favorites. I haven't bought one yet and I would love to be able to start out with a good one instead of buying six and then finding out which one I should have bought from the get go.
Also while I am at it, I used a wax resist over an oribe glaze and it changed the color of the glaze, not pretty. Suggestions on benign resist products please. -

My gardens and the woods around me are full of interesting leaves. It got me thinking about how I could incorporate leaves into my glazing and decoration. What have you tried and what was the outcome? -
firing a ^6 glaze to ^10
Posted 9 Jun 2012
I was chatting with a potter friend today and mentioned that I was looking for a glaze to use on the rims of some pieces that would run. Her suggestion was to use a ^6 glaze over the ^10 glazes I already use, just on the very top rim and fire to ^10. She thought the ^6 glaze would run in drips. Anyone tried this? Pictures? Horror stories?
