About Me

New England girl, studied dance (ballet) Boston, became a hoofer (tap), worked at Radio City Music Hall (Rockette) where I got my clay addiction (friend in costume dept.). Studied pottery at the 92nd Street Y between shows back when we did 4 & 5 shows a day in those fascinating 1960's! In the late 60's & 70's studied with Don Bradford in Park Ridge, N.J. (now of Long Branch, N.J.), Karen Karnes at workshops at Montclair State, Michael Zakin at Old Church Cultural Center N.J., and numerous others at conferences and workshops in N.Y. Built my first kick wheel (Charles Counts' design plan) in 1975. Bought my first kiln in 1978 and just sent it to the recycler (2013) after many element changes and re-wirings.

I've had the good fortune of living in Southern California since 1980 and raised two artistic children. The clay community here is very active. Ever the student, I looked forward to working with the Native Americans from Santa Clara in the summers at Idylwild. I love Voulkas' torn forms and how spontaneous Vivika Heino was with her glazes and brush work. Currently I follow Elaine and Tom Coleman's work as well as Frank Masserella of Ojai, who's throwing skill is awesome.

One of my favorite trips is seeing my old friend Helena Brennan of Ireland who was a Bernard Leach apprentice. She and her husband Peter brought the pottery tradition back to Ireland with their teaching and activism.

My work is mostly functional tableware, garden sculpture (those little surprises you come across along a garden path), and teaching and mentoring students. I like glazes that move, swirly brush-work and texture on my pots. All this from an old "hoofer" and I'm still learning new steps!
