  1. Re-firing Glazed Work That Failed to Reach Temp 3 Times?

    Posted 13 Mar 2013

Class kiln has misfired 3 times in a row now on Cone 6 glaze firing. Much of the work is Empty Bowls and the event is just around the corner. If we can get space in someone else's kiln what can we expect of the clay & glazes? They will have had considerable heat work and time already.

I re-fired a load like this once but the pots had only had one failed firing, not 3. Will the glazes start to run off the pots? Clay body slump? If the worst that happens is that some color burns out of the glazes, that will be ok.

(The kiln gets a little over 1900F, then throws an error code - too slow rate of rise- and shuts off (working with L & L on solution & have replaced about everything replaceable, but that's another topic). Thanks.
  2. What is PV?

    Posted 4 Jan 2013

One of the glazes posted in the Electric Kiln Firing download from Ceramic Arts Daily lists an ingredient as PV. I've racked my brain and looked through some chemical lists, but found nothing. What is PV? Thanks.
  3. Input on Combined Class

    Posted 6 Dec 2012

Another potter and I will be 'team teaching' a 6-week long introductory class (2 hours each week) at a small local art center. I'll be doing the wheel part and the other potter will teach hand building. We'll both be present at the first class and then we'll take turns in the following weeks. First class will intro wheel & hand building. Second & third wheel only, fourth & fifth hand building only and the last class will be glazing. While we've both taught before, we've never done a team class. Any suggestions or words of wisdom to offer?
    Thanks.
  4. Glaze Ghosting on Shelves

    Posted 20 Sep 2012

After glaze firings (Cone 6, electric) 'ghost' rings of some pots show up on the kiln shelves. I typically keep firing on the shelves until the rings become quite numerous and then I add more kiln wash to cover them.

    • Since the rings don't form around every pot, is this the result of 'powdery' glazes sort of misting off during the firing?
    • While pots don't seem to stick when set on top of a 'ghost ring', do I really need to be adding more kiln wash? My kiln wash is 25% calcined EPK, 25% EPK and 50% Alumina Hydrate and it holds up really well otherwise.

Searched the forum to see if this had been addressed in the past but didn't see anything. Thanks.
