  1. Fixing a Runny Glaze

    Posted 28 Apr 2013

I have been testing this glaze, and I like the surface-kind of a bright Celadon without the colourants. I want to prevent it from running as it does now. I know that I need to up the clay content, but by what percentage? How much kaolin can I add without changing the character/shininess of the glaze?
    Here's the recipe
    Cone 10 reduction
    Synthetic Ash.
    Potash feldspar 33
    Whiting 33
    Albany slip 13
    Kaolin[EPK[ 5
    Bentonite 5
    Bone Ash 3.5
    Dolomite 2.5
    Silica[flint] 1.5
    ------
    96.5
    Red Iron ox. 3
    Cobalt carb. 1.5
    Total 100
  2. GOT A CONE 06 CLEAR RECIPE

    Posted 12 Apr 2013

I have about 10 Mother's Day mugs I made with kids. I got them to decorate with coloured slips while leather hard. Now I am looking for a shiny cone 06 clear that will work with reds and purples. This is not my temperature, other than using commercial glazes. I just want to dip these and fire them in my bisque kiln.
    Thanks,TJR.
  3. Left at the Altar

    Posted 12 Apr 2013

Got a call on my machine on Thursday. I picked up the message this morning. The "dear John letter said", Tom we are going in a different direction .We won't need your order after all. The order was for 83 mugs @ $i5.00 each. Total..$1245.00. I did not take a deposit. She was a friend of mine. Mugs are made and bisqued, ready to be glazed. Now what? Go for a beer?
Have you had any similiar letdowns. I think they might have gone to the Dollar Store. These were going to be gifts for speakers at a conference.

  4. What was the best "trade" you made for your work

    Posted 17 Mar 2013

I have a cabin on a lake. Sometimes I go there in the winter to check on it and do some snowshoeing. One year, I came into the cabin and set a plastic basin on top of my electric stove. I then went to turn the main power on.When I got back to the kitchen, the basin had liquified and was dripping into the burners. The stove elements had been on! Power had not been on.Some of the knobs were loose, and were painted with nail polish to tell where the "on" button was. Anyway, the electric stove was wrecked.
I mentioned it to my buddy Albert who lives out there. He said he had a stove that he was not using. He would trade it to me for a large bowl!So we did the deal, and the stove has worked great for at least 10 years.
So, my trade was a stoneware bowl for an electric stove. Have you got a good one?

  5. WOULD YOU LIKE SOME CHEESE WITH THAT Whine

    Posted 25 Feb 2013

We started on the "Art is Work' blog. Really, we should be on the teaching is work blog. How is teaching in your area? What is good, what is bad? How can you make your life easier?
Could be high school, elementary, hobby classes, whether you teach it or take the class. This is your chance to vent.

Thanks for the hint, I keep using them to soften the comments as I know that at times I can be abrasive when I mean humorous. Guess I never grew a funny bone! I am learning to tread very lightly in the forums-slowly.

TJR That particular fountain is Cone 1 Majolica and low fire red terracotta that is fired to it's max temp. to make it vitrified and hold up to freezing weather. The spills and moldings are Cone 6, I worked on the low fire glaze and clay combination development for 6 months. I wanted it vitrified and not crazing which is what Majolica does. I have done 3-3' and 2-6' murals also w...

Thanks. Sometimes the comments and commentors are just get too serious; a little levity is needed.
