I seem to have a terrible time opening and pulling up walls on pots on the wheel after getting the clay centered. The pot twists around and then the top part breaks off.

Just for grins, I put a level on the wheel head and found that one side is about 1/8" lower than the other. Is this significant enough to worry about? Is this, perhaps, causing my problem with opening/pulling? Or do I just need to practice, practice, practice?

And, if I want to correct that 1/8" difference & level the wheel head ... how do I do that?

Hi all ...

I have a cabinet full of old issues of pottery magazines, some going back to the 1980's. Most of these are in "like new" condition. They've been great for learning more about techniques, artists, etc.

But now, I have a problem: I'm moving 1500 miles and am paring down. Question is ... what to do with these magazines. I don't want to toss them out and, as a group, they'd add major $$ to the moving expenses. Plus there's not room for them in the new place.

I'm willing to give them to someone who'd either come & get them or pay for the shipping supplies & postage (media rate) for me to mail them. Any other suggestions?

Hi all ...

Hoping to get your advice / suggestions on what to do with some cone 10 porcelain clay that's just sitting in my studio. A friend moved to NY last year and I helped her by buying her clay so she wouldn't have to move it.

Well, part of the clay (150 pounds of it) is a wonderful (and slightly expensive) cone 10 porcelain ... Laguna WC-631. Since I work mainly with cone 5 & 6 clays, all of my glazes are for those temperatures and most likely won't fit the cone 10 body. And I really don't want to fire my kiln that high.

The clay is hard and has some mold spots, but I'm not worried about that. Clay can be softened up and the mold disappears when it's worked or fired.

So ... what the heck can I do with this clay?

I have some crystal and non-crystal glazes (cone 5-6) and I'm wondering if pieces that use non-crystal glaze can be fired in the load with the crystal glazes.

My confusion lies in the fact that the crystal glazes usually have a hold time at the end of the firing cycle while the non-crystal glazes don't. Then, some crystal glazes have a slight cool-down and then a hold.

Would this adversely affect the non-crystal glazes? Or can they be fired with the crystal glazed pieces?
