About Me
Hi, my name is Julia Passamonti-Colamartino, thanks for dropping by and checking out my page.
I am a bilingual Italian-American and I am a full time artist and healer. Each piece that I create is very special, because it is imbued with sacred healing energy. To me, creating art is a sacred process in that Source Energy is channeled through my body, expressing itself through my hands and into my work. I often enter into a theta state as I create, and am unaware of the many hours that pass as I make each piece. (For more on this, I invite you to read one of my favorite and I think best books ever written on the power of the subconscious mind, "The Genie Within" by Harry W. Carpenter.)
I was born an artist and have been an ancient history buff all my life, having started out as an oil portrait artist working in the style of the old Italian and Dutch Renaissance Masters. But I also love the malleability and timelessness of clay just as much, and have found a way to combine both my joy of painting and my love of ancient history by reproducing ancient vessels as well as doing portraits and fantasy oil paintings in the old style.
The Venetian Cat Studio began in 2004 with a gift of patronage from my mother, Camille Passamonti, who is a talented portrait artist and also a lover of ancient history.
My passion for things ancient began as a child upon seeing the movie Ben Hur, and later during a visit to Italy , the Colosseum in Rome , where I felt myself transported to a time when gladiators fought in the arena. Also, I was particularly drawn to the Greek and Roman pottery in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts where my mother frequently brought me, because the ancient works felt very familiar.
I have worked in oils and clay ever since I first saw pottery being decorated in Italy when I was nine, and it has taken me over to thirty years to understand how Italian painting, Italian pottery (maiolica) and ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman pottery were produced; however, I am learning new things all the time through the information and feedback that I get from my wonderful customers.
I enjoy painting as much as throwing pots, and it gives me an infinite blank canvas upon which to create. I'm not only an artist as is known today, but as one of times long past. I combine ancient techniques along with today's wonderful modern technology to create my work. I currently hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design and have completed a 2 year course of study in herbology.
My studio is in East Wakefield, New Hampshire, where I get to play with clay and paints and reside with my husband, plants and herbs and a small herd of 5 cats.
