I was just viewing the recent forum on Slab Cutters and checked out the sites that were posted. Neil added a link to a Ceramic Supply site as did another member. Those were ones I was unaware of. So I got to wondering what else is out there that I or others like me would find helpful and informative that we dont know about. So how about sharing your favorite clay sites that might be of interest to your fellow potters. The you tube site that was on the slab cutter forum was very enlighting also. There is a wealth of info out there if we only know where to look. So new to clay or experienced wont you share with the rest of us.

I have been perusing the subjects on this forum and havent found this topic or perhaps I just breezed by it.

Mayco puts out a series of glazes called Jungle Gems that have bits of colered clay or flake/crystals mixed in with the glaze. Most of the other glaze companies have similar type glazes. The question is, what exactly are the crystals/flakes of color, can you make them yourself or perhaps just buy the crystals/flakes without the glaze.
I haven't found them offered anywhere yet. Of course I don't know exactly what they would be called.

At the moment I am trying edge glazing and would like more flake/crystals than the jar contains. Would also like to make combinations to my taste.

Any input would be helpful.

I have replaced all the elements in my small Duncan. In the process a section of kiln brick about 4" came off and the element is exposed. It wants to buldge. I have watched the video on Paragons site to see how to use pins/staples to keep it in place. It appears that it is alright if the pins touch the element itself. But before I insert the pins I want to make sure I am seeing things correctly. So will there be any electrical problems if the pins touch the element. Dont want to waste time and effort by not measuring twice and cutting once as the old adage goes.

And dont tell me that its slim pickins as I know full well there is a wealth of knowledge out there.
I am thinking of doing a large number of pieces that need to have a repetive graphic. Something not to detailed but is stamped one image at a time.
So am wondering if anyone has any experience using diluted Mason stain as an ink for a stamp pad. I have looked at the forums and havent quite found exactly what I am looking for. I would be using a rubber stamp of my own design. If there is something better for this process or is there an ink that would withstand ^6 firing. I would sure appreciate learning about it. I will be working on Porcelain and Stoneware.

Morning all,

Just finished a firing with the new elements. Need to make a minor adjustment for the top shelf. Everything fired to cone 6 except the top shelf, know this because the oxidation I am using is a nice paperbag brown when mature. Top shelf ware has a carmel cast indicating its not up to cone.

This is a small Duncan kiln and holds up to four full shelves. I usually keep a 1" clearence between the tallest piece and the bottom of the next shelf up. This time the underfiring happened on the top shelf and there was only a 1/2" clearence between it and the platters. I am thinking that is what caused the difference in maturity.

All the elements are firilng just fine. Did an empty test run and everything looked good. Test run was Empty no furniture. Should have probably had the furniture in so I could place Witness cones just to be extra sure. Hindsight is 20/20

Have another load in with plenty of clearence at the top shelf level with witness cones. Will know more tomorrow when I empty the kiln.

So a question comes to mind. I need just a bit more space if I am going to get the clearences I need. Could invest in the Advancer shelves, but forgot to water the money tree out back . Soooo--- Do I really need the bottom shelf which is raised on 1/2 supports or could I place a cone 6, 1/4" thick disk on the bottom and set a ware on it, with the shelf supports sitting directly on the kiln bottom? Kiln shelves are 5/8". Eliminating the shelf directly on the bottom and its supports would give me the extra space needed. Just dont want to damage the Kiln bottom.

Would appreciate any help on this.
