  1. In Topic: Another pug mill question(s)

    Posted 1 Jun 2013

I've had mine for about three years, and only broken it down once, probably a year and a half after I started using it. Then it was mostly because early on I hadn't developed a good strategy for keeping the clay moist between pugging (2-3 month intervals) and it had developed some dryish spots inside the chamber that would end up on the outsides of the pugged clay. So now, I place a very moist cloth in the vacuum chamber and the hopper and a dripping 3" sponge in the end and rubber-band plastic, and I probably won't clean it out again until I mess up and let something dry out when it shouldn't, or I drastically change clay.

I have an Axner, and I really like it. Having not experienced any other options except the one at school (which was likely an old Walker or the like), I can't offer comparisons. But I've used it, for a couple of years now, and I love it. I've torn it down and cleaned it once.

  3. In Topic: What Do You Pug?

I pug everything - rehydrated greenware, splash pan waste, slurry bucket (after letting it dry out to plastic consistency, of course). I try pretty hard to keep the fine slip in it, because I've assumed that it would lose plasticity without it. In addition to that, I usually do a half-to-half (roughly) ratio of recycle to new clay. Yes, I pug my new clay. When it's brand new, it's just right, but since I buy in bulk, by the time I use the last boxes, it needs the recycle to soften it up.

I have a vent-a-kiln that came with my used kiln purchase. While I 'wanted' a bottom mount vent, I couldn't (yet) justify buying another when I have one. I'm fairly happy with the heat removal aspect of it. Part of their sales pitch on their website is that they've been called in to 'fix' overheating rooms with bottom vented kilns. For whatever that's worth!

Tom - that is funny to me because..... I just went online the other evening to order a couple more fettling knives.... You've given me a glimpse of my future.
