Cleaning kiln shelf
Posted 26 Jan 2013
I have never had any formal training kiln use and have always been very careful with applying my glazes to avoid glaze drips. Most drips, if they occur are easily scrapped off because of the kiln wash. However, I did just have a glaze drip on one of my kiln shelves, small, but it ate through the kiln wash and went into the shelf itself. I have tried grinding it down with small grinding bits and now have a one inch long shallow groove in the shelf that still has some glaze in it. My question is, can I just leave it alone, re-do the kiln wash and avoid this spot in future firings? Will the glaze drip continue to eat through the shelf? Seems like a goofy question but I have never seen this addressed on the forums before.
Thanks -
Nan Rothwell Workshop
Posted 3 Sep 2012
Just got back from a three day throwing intensive workshop in Virginia at Nan Rothwell's studio. Nan is not only a great potter, she is a gifted teacher. I had reached a plateau in my throwing skills and needed to kick start the creative juices. This workshop did that and more. Don't think I have ever been so productive. Thanks Nan! -
cone 6 glazes
Posted 3 Sep 2012
I just finished a wonderful workshop with Nan Rothwell at her studio in Virginia. It was a very productive workshop as Nan is not only a great potter, but a gifted teacher. However the clay we used in the workshop is Highwater Phoenix which is a cone 6-10 clay. My glazes are all cone 6. I had a lot of crazing using Coyote glazes on previous firings with Phoenix clay. Can anyone tell me is they know what cone 6 glazes work well with Phoenix?
