  1. In Topic: if you could be any potter?

    Posted 18 May 2013

Yes that is fun. I had tea in St. Ives with Janet Leach.
Lunch with Dave Shaner at Frances Senska's house.
Breakfast with Richard Notkin at my house.
Coffee with Kurt Weiser at my house.
Cheerios with Bill Daley in early morning at the Bray.
Plus many visits with potters in New England, Montana, Russia,Iceland, Uzbekistan, Latvia, Italy, and Spain including Ardcadi Vlasco, Allessio Tasco, Vladimir Tsivin,
Dancing with Rudy Autio at the opening of Garth Clark's 100 Years of American Ceramics show in Pullman , Washington.
Jack Troy and I sat next to each other on a bus trip to possibly the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania. His pack was above us and his garlic was dripping on me. He was eating garlic for his cold. That was a trip!

    Great memories..

  2. In Topic: Black Glaze Problem

    Posted 18 May 2013

Did you see this glaze come out anywhere where it was actually black?
    What clay were you using?
Find out the temperature the kiln fires to. Then we may be able to figure this out.

I just got my hands on a drill with a bit that would go through steel and just finished drilling the head to fit standard bats. Hopefully that should take care of the problem, otherwise, I'm going to put a birch wood top on it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

when drilling metal keep adding lubricating oil. 3-in-1 works fine.

Maybe you could attach a 5/8" birch plywood to the wheel head leveling it with J.B.Weld as it seals it to the wheel head. Then using a saber saw, stabilize your saw into position and cut the plywood round. You could still drill holes for longer 1/4" bat pins You can get them at most hardware stores. I have really long ones for my bat that is 2" thick to raise large bats above my splash pan.
Be sure to sand the edge of the would to avoid splinters.

  5. In Topic: negative, rude or blunt post in threads

    Dear Stephen,
I have noticed some of what you mention. I left another forum because of the nasty behavior of bullies. I was a member of that one for close to 20 years. I still have friends from there. I thought this one was pretty tame.
I hope I have not been rude or insensitive. I usually post a welcome when someone posts they are new to the forum.
I think it is a valuable tool for the world of clay. I learned something today in the archives that I am using this afternoon for trimming wierd shapes.
Thank you for airing your concerns. Maybe it will help to reduce the issues that concern you.

    Marcia

    Marcia;
I copied down your glaze test idea so that I can try it. I think you have a mistake on the fourth line. Should be C +E. TOM.

As Patti Warashina says (and I am at her feet) clay is a most humbling media and we must be crazy to work with it.
