Thanks for the dipping suggestions, OC. I will get into trying these glazes again this summer. I mixed several of them after taking a workshop with SH about a year ago. I will make beefier test tiles and have another go. SH says SCM should be 60% of the total glaze thickness, so I was operating off that. My spraying tests worked well, just would like a more efficient way to try lots of combos.

It's good to know others that are working with these glazes, hope we can continue to support each other's efforts. There is a web group about this, but it seems dead and is very difficult to navigate.

John, thanks for the pictures, nice results.

I am wondering about how it would effect colors. I have a friend with the same kiln I have, using the same firing cycle, firing the same glaze, dipped out of the same bucket. His fires the color the glaze should be, mine, no matter how I test it, thick, thin, on different clays, on different shelves in kiln, NEVER achieves the desired color. The only difference is he has the vent, I don't. I get cones as even as he does, everything else I can think of is the same but the results.

How interesting. Do you have your tiles and the pyrometric cone at the same place (shelf)?
Sounds kind of a dumb question, but how else would you explain that you cannot achieve the same affect as (s)he does?

I have tried this glaze on every clay in every spot in my kiln at every thickness. I have NO idea. It's a great glaze, it really is bugging me that this new potter, firing his kiln for the first few times, can get this and I can't. All my other glazes get fabulous color, depth and complexity. It is a ^6 red, if that has anything to do with it. And I am not using any other reds to compare results with.

I remember reading somewhere that you should flip your shelves with each firing, so the kiln wash should go on both sides. I have no personal experience with this, so....anyone? How true (or necessary) is this?

DO NOT WASH BOTH SIDES_-REPEAT DO NOT WASH BOTH SIDES
OK we cleared that up-By the way if you do wash both sides you will reget it every glaze fire from fallout siticking to your wares.

I have not washed my shelves, I try to put a foot on everything, but sometime test glazes do run off. I had been warned about the warping issue. Now, several years later, I wish I had, my shelves are a bit sloppy looking with patched of wash over ground off run spots. think I will do a THIN application just for safety sake. I am using all 1/2 shelves, and am assuming they will be much less likely to warp with no turning.

I had never heard of washing the bottom of the kiln. in that vein, how close to the bottom-floor can I put my first shelf? I had been taught 2", but that puts the shelf above the 1st element.

John, are you having any trouble with the 2nd glaze staying on the test tile when you dip? I have tried repeatedly to dip various glazes over the SCM, warm and cool, and the SCM dries on the tile immediately but the 2nd glaze WILL NOT dry. It looks like the test tile with the dry SCM is 'sort of greasy. I have to use a heat gun to get the combo dry enough to handle and get in the kiln. I have tried this several times with different 2nd glazes, all ones that behave well on their own. Always get the same results. It would be nice to dip these tests, changing , rinsing, the spray guns for a tiny amount seems laborious.

I liked your post about working in the studio, didn't know that it would freak out so many and get so off topic ;)
