  1. Blaise DePaolo: Glass Fusing WKSP / June 22 & 23 / Baltimore Clayworks

    Blaise DePaolo Workshop / June 22 & 23 / Baltimore Clayworks

WS03 - Glass Fusing for the Ceramic Artist

Glass is just clay you can see through. They consist of the same properties and require many of the same treatments. Knowledge of ceramics and the ability to make simple forms in clay is of great benefit in glass fusing. This two-day workshop will take students through the basics of glass cutting, fusing and slumping. We will discuss the unique characteristics of glass and how the kiln process changes the material from separate, laminated pieces of glass to a fused and melted single sheet of glass. In a separate firing the work is then ‘slumped’ over or into bisque fired ceramic forms. Simple fusing and slumping firing schedules will be discussed and students will go away with a completed work and enough knowledge to use their own programmable kilns to fuse and slump glass.

Blaise DePaolo earned her MFA in Ceramic Sculpture at the Rochester Institute of Technology, School of American Craft in 1997 with a minor in glass. She did her undergraduate work at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. DePaolo’s travels in Mexico and Central America have been a defining influence on her work. She has exhibited nationally, is a member artist of Baltimore Clayworks, a faculty member of the Fine Art Department at Morgan State University and has created numerous public art projects in Baltimore City and the State of Maryland. She lives with her husband and two sons in the Idlewylde neighborhood of Baltimore County. www.blaisedepaolo.com

WS02 - Beyond Flat - Playing with Form and Surface

In this two-day workshop, students will learn new ways of working with soft clay using simple and inexpensive materials to design unique and personal forms. Chandra will share techniques used to alter wheel-thrown work and to create multiple parts for building narrative pots. Students will learn to energize the clay surface through imagery and pattern. Chandra will demonstrate techniques for freehand drawing, direct image transfer, underglaze inlay, sgraffito, and the use of slip, wax, and underglaze to create a layered and colorful surface. The workshop will provide a balance between theoretical and technical concerns of communicating a visual message through pottery. Throughout the weekend, Chandra will emphasize the importance of play, as process, in pushing work forward. This workshop will be suitable for beginning to advanced students striving to develop a more cohesive relationship between form and surface in their own work.

Chandra DeBuse currently lives and works in Kansas City, MO. After receiving a degree in psychology, she discovered her love of functional pottery while taking a community wheel throwing class. She was a special student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln before receiving her MFA from the University of Florida in 2010. Following her graduate degree, Chandra completed a nine--month residency at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, FL where she taught adult and children’s clay classes. She was resident artist at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN in 2011-2012. Chandra’s pottery incorporates bouncing lines, candy colors, low relief and hand-drawn imagery. She was named an Emerging Artist by NCECA and presented a lecture about her work at the 2012 Seattle conference.

In this three-day workshop participants will explore the nuance and history of tea; specifically focusing on teapots, Yunomi, tea cups and caddies. We will examine the collaborative relationship between surface, form and purpose. Participants can expect vital discussions on how ideas in pottery and expressed purpose of an object can engage and inspire both surface and form. When asked to discuss the teapot, Jeff shared these thoughts:

I think of the teapot as the soufflé of pottery shapes. It requires a knowledge of materials, technique, patience and trust. The kiln is opened, the teapot takes a bow and demands attention, or lowers it’s head on the way to the dumpster. Why when teabags have been in use since 1904 do we keep coming back to this form? It challenges all our senses and as with the soufflé it is comprised of basic ingredients all dressed up, intended for an occasion, and wanting an applause. After 45 years of everything that can go wrong with a teapot from stuck lids to spouts that don’t pour, I keep returning to this idea as there is no other form that can humble and excite at the same time.

This workshop will include a balance of demonstration, discussion and hands-on studio practice. Basic clay experience is required.

A two-day weekend workshop with Potter’s Council charter member Eric Serritella will combine instructor demonstration and student hands-on participation to create birch bark from clay. Eric will share a wealth of clay techniques to make realistic bark baskets and vessels. Each student will try the techniques on small pieces to keep. The students will learn how to create large slabs without the use of a slab roller, how to handle, assemble, and use templates for making projects from slabs, and the mixing and use of slips and ceramic stains for visual accents that mimic the look of birch bark and leather straps.
