  1. In Topic: How to make a plaster cast of a flat slab piece?

    Posted 4 Dec 2012

I found some Magic Clay that is air dry clay that is sold for children's projects. It dries to a rubbery firmness and picks up detail easily and doesn't stick to fired clay. You could then make your plaster mold from it or just use it as your mold. I got it in a Dolleramma Store.

  2. In Topic: temp for opening kiln?

    Posted 19 Nov 2012

Hi, I keep the kiln completely closed for the same time the firing took then I prop the lid. Usually wait again the same time of firing before unloading, but gradually pull the plugs out. Totally manual kiln with cones & a timer.

    Happy firing

I was advised to keep 1 piece every year that you just could not part with, as a result I have many pieces from over the years .

    Hello,

I currently throw stoneware and fire it to cone 6. If I wanted to throw large pots and keep them outside overwinter in NY, should I use a special clay or change my firing to avoid cracks?
I have a Skut Electric kiln.

    Many thanks,
    Evan

I live in Manitoba Canada and I loosen the dirt inside my pots and place them either on their sies or upside down. We can get up to -40 in the winter and these pots haven't broken over several winters. The clay is a medium body stoneware fired to cone 6. I've also used raku clay and high fired clay all fired to cone 7 without a problem. The pots are both thrown and hand built.

  5. In Topic: advice on smaller pug mill, please

    Posted 16 Jul 2012

I have a small Peter pugger, deairing. I pug up my recycled clay about every 2nd week. I recycle by putting the trimmings into throwing water & when soaked I mix with a drill then dry it to consistency on a plaster bat. Works great and is perfectly soft for me to throw since I have rheumatriod arthritis. I also wear neoprene wrist bands to help relieve tension on my wrists.
