About Me
I first experienced clay at school where we made very simple thumb pots and coiled forms. Our classroom didn’t have a wheel so this was all we got to do. Fast forward to 2008, I stumbled across a local community class and the feeling of wanting to ‘touch’ clay had been awakened again so I decided I should do something about it.
By the time I had completed my first 8-week session, I was hooked and followed up with two more terms at which time I was encouraged by the instructor to go to college. I attended the college exhibition to get a feel for what I might expect and realised I both needed and wanted to enrol.
Since then, I have had the opportunity to build my own studio and while it is small, its large glass doors open to a private area of the garden, making it a peaceful space where I happily spend hours working. My early work was wheel thrown but being at college provided an opportunity to try slab construction, extruded design, sprigging, mould-making & slip casting. I’m no artist but I do enjoy painting designs and have also done a little with tissue transfers.
Like everyone I need to work which means clay is a part-time hobby and classes are one night per week but it is a great way to de-stress and create something that is often mediocre, much less frequent great, but always fun. In 2011, I successfully graduated Certificate III in Ceramics and am currently studying Certificate IV in Ceramics where we are afforded the freedom to set our own projects within set subject guidelines.
