About Me

After 15 years as a professional woodcarver, I've starting over by teaching myself to sculpt clay. As of 2012, I have been sculpting off and on for three years, so I'm still learning the limitations and capabilities of low-fire earthenware and paper clays. Since clay is heavier and more fragile than wood, I'm having to imagine new ways to achieve my design goals, but I'm enjoying the luxury of being able to "undo" my mistakes -- something ya can't do with wood!

Are you using your wood carving tools in clay? PS: despite what it says, I'm just beginner who asks far too many questions and does almost everything in violation of all the rules , just to see what will happen -and if you really can't. :)

I, too, started as a woodcarver, then worked my way through all sorts of media--ending with clay. I also work with paper clay--do you work wet, dry or both? Did you get a wood base that worked for you?
