Clay Shrinkage
Posted 7 May 2013
I was just throwing a few mugs with rather specific final dimensions in mind and realized that what I thought to be true may not be. Is clay shrinkage uniform in all directions? For example, if I have a freshly thrown cylinder which stands 6" tall and has a diameter of 4" will the final dimensions be 5.28 by 3.52" after the glaze firing? -
Horse Hair Surface Decoration
Posted 22 Feb 2013
A friend just contacted me with the sad news of the passing of a dear friend of hers. She has been charged with the responsibility of making an urn for his ashes and would love to use horse hair decoration. I assume she must mean horse hair raku and I have no familiarity with the technique. Do any of you have any suggestions that would be helpful, firing temperature, type of clay, how much horse hair, etc? Thank you for being a deep pond of knowledge, Joan Klotz. -
Clear for use over brown clay
Posted 24 Jan 2013
I need help from you experienced heads. I usually use white stoneware and fire to cone 6 but have decided to try out some ideas using brown clay (Electric Brown from Laguna) - at the same temperature. I would like a clear glaze which results in a nice rich color from the underlying clay, but a friend was showing me a pot he had just finished yesterday using a different brown clay. Where the pot was not glazed (footring) the color was a lovely lively red/brown but where it had been covered with glaze it was a dull muddy brown. The glaze he used was a commercial glaze that he had purchased so I have no information on its composition. Are there particular ingredients that I should be sure to include to get the look I want? ingredients to avoid? Does anyone have a cone 6 recipe they have had success with? Help please! -
Digital Photograph Size
Posted 19 Sep 2012
I approached a local "gallery"/gift shop owner about carrying some of my work and she asked me to email her photographs. I was thinking of sending her 10 shots of recent work but I don't know what the appropriate size for such a mailing should be. Do any of you experienced heads have suggestions? Thanks, Joan (Venicemud).
