In Topic: Skutt Envirovent
Posted 13 Jun 2013
I am using a skutt enviro vent system, I have had surprising results. I bought it to help vent, and hoped it would help balance the firing in my Skutt 1027, I have a dual Skutt pyrometer set up. Before the vent system I would have between 50 and 80 degrees from top to bottom after installing the vent it was 10 to 15 degrees. I was surprised I wasn't expecting much and I was measuring top to bottom, if I had measured from the middle to the bottom the difference wouldn't be so drastic. I'm not sure I would buy it just for balancing the temp since I do that manually towards the end of the firing. Denice -
In Topic: Lots of Glaze

I know I'm a rebel saying this but I would use them on non functional work. Lead glazes in general are beautiful glazes, the government banned them because people were getting lead poisoning from eating off of dishes that had a lead based glaze. As I remember it most of the dishes were bought or made outside of the US, it's a pity the government couldn't find a better way to control the situation. Wear a dust mask and gloves while working with it and you'll be fine. Denice -

In Topic: Those who can, do, those who can't teach
Posted 5 Jun 2013
I'm not a teacher but have done some voluntary art classes as my son went through school. I learned from this experience that teachers in general are very giving people and art teachers could be accomplished artist if they had the time. I thought I wanted to be a teacher until I taught a class and found out that I wanted to spend my time in the studio. not teaching. I think having a art ed degree for the younger students is a must, but for high school and college a masters degree works well. The teacher has focused in an area of art and could help the student do the same. I know in college most of the classes were taught by students getting master degrees, some did well others floundered. Denice -

Zip lock bags inside the containers is a good idea, if someone found the cooler they probably wouldn't open the bags. Denice

23 Dec 2012 - 11:49Thanks for writing. I accidentally deleted the message before I finished reading all of it, but I appreciate your kind support. It boggles the mind that Mia is the moderator. She seems a little overly critical, and I am overly sensitive, so that is a bad combination. I did get a lot out of the rest of the posts though. I hope you have a great Christmas holiday!
