Kiln Controler
Posted 4 Apr 2013
Do electronic kiln controlers actually simulate heat work on pyrometric cones or do they just measure air temperature?

Glaze on Bisque
Posted 14 Mar 2013
I noticed years ago that there are two layers of glaze on a bisqued pot, dipped specifically. There is the glaze and if that layer is chipped off there is a faint layer of residue. Then there is the bisqued substrate. I just got to thinking today about that and wondered if anyone here knows what that residual layer is, and/or is called?

Color Active Slip
Posted 21 Jan 2013
I can't find any recipes for a cone 6 "color active," or fluxing slip. I'm really not sure what designates a slip as such, beyond the presence of more than normal percentages of flux(s). If I were to use a lower cone slip would it act like a color active slip?

A Question About Glaze Calculators
Posted 20 Jan 2013
When I put Calcium Carb. and Silica in the calculator I get a corresponding increase in CaO and SiO2. But, when I remove them and put an equal amount of Wollastonite into the calculation the CaO increases but the SiO2 decreases. What am I missing here?

My second attempt...
Posted 14 Jan 2013
I designed these two pretty much from scratch. Again I came up short on the melt and probably need to flux them more. Of course, since I have no idea what I'm doing, I have no idea, lol.
I used the ternary chart Hermes provided but I'm thinking that it was for cone 10 glazes. My flux/alumina/silica numbers came up in the best melt zone. Also, I'm leach testing them overnight. Both mugs are on the same body, and the glazes use the same coloring oxides. The base glazes are quite a bit different though.
