Hi... I am interested in firing to cone 6 with my Skutt KM 1018. I am playing with stoneware and porcelain. What cone do I use to bisque? Also,which speed do I use for bisque and final firing (slow, med or fast)? I am in no rush... Last question--should I use "ramp/hold"? I've been reading about holding at certain temps for specific amounts of time, but I truly have no idea where to start. I've fired to cone 04 for years and need a change. I would LOVE any help, my greenware is piling up. Thanks in advance!

Hi Marge,

I would bisque to cone 04 at a medium rate. I only use the ramp/hold feature when the ware is somewhat think or I suspect it might not be bone dry.
With the ramp hold, I can add a segment for candling to make sure the ware is dry before continuing with the firing.

Use a medium fire rate for the glaze (^6) fire too.

I also use ramp/hold for controlled cooling on glaze fires.

Contact Skutt and they can send you a spreadsheet showing the segments for all the cone to use with the ramp/feature.

Medium speed will work fine for most anything. If you have large or thick pots you may want to bisque on slow.

Hi, I have a skutt but someone a while ago gave me a firing poster for paragon. . . It helped a lot with getting me comfortable with my kiln and giving me a place to start . . . Maybe it can help you . . .

The paragon chart is the same one that was with my paragon kiln that I bought over 40 years ago and still fire, the other chart looks like it would be easy for a novice to use. Denice
