Hi all,

I think that I may have seen this posted somewhere else at one time, but I searched for it and didn't find the answer;

Traditionally, I see that terra Sig is made from OM-4 ball calys; is it possible to use the clay/water left over from wheel throwing and add the other neccessary ingredients to make Terra Sig?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.....potting on a tight budget but wanted to try to make some terra sig with just a few basic colors of mason stains....

You can make terra sig from almost any clay, but some work better than others. Its going to depend on what clay you are throwing with.

Porcelain makes lousy sig, but I use whatever else wanders through the studio. We have basic white stoneware sig for adding mason stain to, sigs from several red clays, sig from black clay, sig from clay from my flower bed, you get the picture. The sig often fires a different color than the original clay because of the way the particles separate. My favorite and best burnishing are the flowerbed clay and the black (it fires chocolate brown.) You're just going to have to give it a whirl and see what you get. The worst part of using your slops is going to be figuring out how much deflocculant to add if you are a recipe person. I usually wing it with good luck, but I've had some practice.

It would really depend on that is in your throwing clay. You can probably get a sig out of most any clay, just let it settle and avoid the gritty parts at the bottom.

Thanks, I should have added that I am throwing with Laguna B-Mix......that is what we are using in class, so that is what I was thinking of using for terra sig.

B-mix makes a very usable terra sig, its what I use as a base if I want a sig I can add colorant to or if I just want white.
