I am new to the pottery/ceramics world...

I made a couple bowls out of air dry clay and am wondering what is the best way to finish them. I would like to paint one with brighter colors and the other leave more natural. What is suggested to paint this type of clay with? And, is there any food-safe shellac style topcoat I can put on it protect it?

Any suggestions if greatly appreciated. :)
Thanks,Melissa Liss
