Is there anything you can do to "fix" a load that underfires? I'm making attendee keepsake gifts for a fundraising event on Sept. 15 and I ruined a whole firing. I'm not sure I have time to remake it all. Can anything fix it??? Thanks.

If it is underfired, then you can re-fire at the correct temperature. Make sure that you put a witness cone in the peep hole that you can see. Also, fire slower to allow the glazes to mature.

Under fired ware is not ruined you just need to re-fire hotter.

Give more details about your firing-

What temperature did you want to reach?

Do you have a KilnSitter?

What cone number did you place in the Sitter?

What were the results of your witness cones?

Have you checked your elements?

Was there possibly a power outage or brown out?

Having a bit more information can get you many more answers.

Thanks, everone! I think my elements are dying. I do have a kiln sitter which did not trip. My witness cones weren't placed well and I had trouble seeing them. The timer on the kiln sitter shut off, and based on the amount of time it usually takes me to fire to come 6, I felt there was plenty of time. But when It cooled and I opened it, the kiln sitter cone had hardly bent at all.... I use commercial glazes and the glaze now feels very rough like coarse sandpaper and it looks weird, hard to describe, but clearly under fired. I'll have to learn how to change the elements, have never done it before, and try to refire.
