it looks like a food warmer of European origin....possibly Swiss or Austrian.

Yes it is a food warmer from France. Here is one more for you to see, this one is from Italy. Both of these vessels are wonderfully detailed pieces.

Wow! Marcia that is a real thing isn't it. Well this is only a very elementary guess. It looks like it could be a scientific apparatus of some sort. How about an early Hofmann apparatus or a distiller? It is amazing!

It is a vaporizer found in the Medical Museum in Zurich.
It was IMO very fascinating.
