Hi. I was wanting to take a handbuilding class this summer, but due to the heat not being my friend, I am unable to. So now I am on the search for some great instructional DVDs. I'm more of a visual learner, which is why I'm looking for DVDs and not books. Since throwing is not my friend either, I'm looking for handbuilding ones, and any others that are useful to a beginner. I don't have a fortune to spend, so please keep that in mind. Thank you for any of your comments.

I have, and would recommend, 'Creative Forming with Custom Texture....Personalizing Handbuilt and Wheel Thrown Work' with Amy Sanders.....a 4-disc set. It can be ordered through Ceramic Arts Daily. I'm sure there are others that are excellent too, but this is the only set I have.

Do a search on Youtube for handbuilt pottery or handbuilt ceramics . . . you'll find a lot of videos to choose from, some good, some not so. But, you can't beat the price.

I also have the Amy Sanders DVD and found it to be quite good. Others I have are ones by Mitch Lyons (Handbuilding), Jeremy Randall (Slabs, Templates, Texture and Terra Sigilata), and Sandi Pierantazzi (What If? Explorations with Texture and Soft Slabs).

A really good book is Handbuilt Pottery Techniques Revealed by Jacqui Atkin -- very good step-by-step photos of a number of projects using coil, pinch, and slab techniques. Another good book is Daryl Baird's From a Slab of Clay. Good photos showing projects step-by-step with good explanation.

I agree with those above and also Stephanie Stevenson DVD on ARCHITECTURAL Ceramics. She does an amazing job of tool design, planning, imagery etc.
