Though I have longed to make pottery for years, I never dreamed I would own a wheel.
After a few disappointing views of wheels on internet sale boards, hubby and I agreed it
would be a good thing to order a new one.

Okay, maybe next year. Maybe the next one. Maybe at tax time. Maybe after I save up
enough points on our spending card. So what finally did it? A really bad day at work.

Last week, the straw and the camel came into play. I bit my tongue, took my lunch break
and came back with a new attitude. It was either give my two weeks' notice, or find a
reason to keep my job. Obviously a great idea, as I no sooner ordered the wheel, and was
diagnosed as on the verge of pneumonia. Health benefits - the bright side of one's job.

Unfortunately, it arrived this morning, my third day of practically living sick in bed. I found
my way to the kitchen in time to watch the delivery man carefully place it on the porch, then
knock on the door and hurry out the gate before our three ankle-biters reached the pet door.
He didn't throw it over the fence like the recent flat-screen television news story. Phew!

Too tired to move it indoors, I had to wait until hubby arrived home to get it in the house and
set up. My heart hasn't stopped pounding, I am on a cloud! I've watched the video that came
with the wheel, and am so excited to start my first project, which may have to wait until this
weekend if I feel half human enough to go to work tomorrow.

Not to go too small or too large, I chose the 1/2 HP Speedball Clay Boss. This has inspired hubby
to get his wood lathe out of the shop and get busy with me. It won't take long, and our friends
and families will soon know what every gift from here on out will be. "Oh, look, a clay bowl." and
"Oh, look, a wooden bowl."

Here I go...

Whooo hooooo!

Combine the two together and make wooden stemmed goblets! Or wooden lids on wheel thrown pots! The possible combinations are numerous, and could be really fun and inventive!

Hi,
I got a Clay Boss about 6 months ago, and I don't use it much because it is in a very cold room!! But I really love it when I use it, and I am so glad I bought it!! It is therapy for me on bad days, and a joy on good days!! Enjoy!!

Attaching a picture showing what I did to my Clay Boss. Since husband is a woodworker this should be easy for him. Attached the shelf with 2 bolts with wing nuts on the bottom. Sure helps keep everything within easy reach. Don't usually leave such a mess at the end of a throwing session though. My first wheel is a Creative Artist portable which I use often for demos and programs.

Oh, I really like that, very orderly and tidy!

Hi, Wuvie! First, hope you feel better soon! Second, congratulations and how exciting! I loved reading your post and feel the excitement with you. Hopefully this will get you back on the path of recovery and give you an outlet from work that it sounds like you need. Good luck and don't forget to post pictures of your pieces as you go. I'll be looking forward to seeing them! :D

Agreed! Oh, I like that too! So handy! Now my mind is going on how to fit it in my studio!

So happy you have your wheel Wuvie! I remember the day mine came home and how I couldn't wait to get it set up and sit down and give her a go! I'm excited for you!

Wuvie -

Amazing what gets us moving, eh? For me, we had bought most of the equipment, and I just never got it all together until my boss cut my hours to 30 per week. Oddly, in a lower income time, my husband got behind me and we got everything functioning and bought remaining equipment and glaze materials, and just about the time I was really into it - back to 40 hours per week. But I still have evenings!

Have fun, and get healthy soon!

Many thanks, Alice! I only wish my hours were cut, but still with health benefits. Sigh.

Isn't it funny how that works? You have to work to buy the things you want to do, then
you don't have time to play with new toys.

Oh Wuvie! Congrats! I just got my Clay Boss (same one) a few months ago, so I, too, know your excitement. I was feeling very much like my dogs when they get a treat. LOL! Now, I'm in the same state of mind, because I just told the electrician I accept his quote & to schedule a time to do the wiring for my kiln!!!

I'm loving my wheel! (I wish I had room around it to put that type of shelf on it - very nice!)

I hope you get better real soon, so you can give it a whirl. Pewmonia is NO fun, so take it easy & have a quick recovery!I'll be looking for your post to tell us what you think of using your new wheel.

I just love all this shared enthusiasm! No fuddy duddies around here, that's for certain!

Did you get the package deal with the video, bats, tools, glaze and such for $499.00?
I thought that was a good deal compared to the other sites I visited, so i nabbed it.

Many thanks! I can't wait to try it!

I too got my new wheel this past year. I love it, my husband is as excited for me to have it as I am.

He has elaborate plans for when he retires, and we can use the clay studio, the wood working shop, the glass shop, the metal work room- all to keep us out of the poor house! I am wondering if these things might be instrumental in getting us into the poorhouse!

I would not have it any other way, tho. I love my little clay studio, it affords me many hours of enjoyment. Since I retired already, I am busy taking workshops and learning as much as I can, and having a ball in the process.

I hope you are better soon, so you can get on that wheel! Enjoy!

Definitely agree. 40 hours a week and house and yard work don't leave much time for fun on the wheel! There's free time but it doesn't seem like the free blocks are large enough. Posted Image
