Sometimes it's really hard to believe that being in the studio is my goal each day ... making pottery is something I truly love to do ... my studio is my favorite spot ... so why do I find a dozen things that need to be done before I head in there??? Does that closet really need organizing? Does that e-mail need to be re-sorted? Do I really need to check into the forum and facebook? I want to be in my studio, but I keep myself out ... what's up with that!!

What's up with that is that creating is very hard work. I think that is the reason most established potters have an easily recognized style. It's easy to make the same pot over and over but hard to come up with a new design. You may have almost sweated blood coming up with what is for you the almost perfect mug or pitcher or whatever, but now that you're happy with it, it is easy to make and fun to tweak and push the shape. Going to the studio to make a dozen of the mug that you jokingly told someone it took 30 years to make is a lot easier than going to the studio determined to make a new style mug that is nothing like the mugs you are known for. I can work all day cutting brush, mixing clay, etc but I'm blown after two hours of working on a new pot.

Hey, Chris;
As many of you will know by now, I moved studios after 26 years. Had to find a plate rack for a show I'm in, and couldn't find it in the 20 boxes I looked i. I moved as of Jan.15. Still haven't made a pot. I painted shelves, washed bats, and now I have decided to seal the concrete floor with a plastic sealer, so moved everything over to one side of the room. I know I will get there. It's just that there is another load of laundry I could be doing.Maybe I will shovel the walk!

I too can fall victim to "Netflix." Right now, I am consumed with a stupid series called Mr. Monk. But I have watched a lot of these on my computer as I wait for my renovations to be completed. Right now, my excuse is drying time.

I am waiting for my big trays to dry sufficiently so that I can start to carve. It is interesting for me. While I check everyday on these pieces, the drying time is much different than that of which I am used to in my old studio.

I do not have the condensation happening on my plastic wrap?? Not sure if it is the clay, my level of moisture or the fact my rule is fairly well insulated. Almost consistent with a drying room.

Anyway, I digress...

I'm a little like Chris I throw some clothes in the wash or unload the dishwasher or do bookwork in the morning before I head to the shop. One reason is that once I start working it's hard to stop so I know I won't make it back into the house to do anything. The other reason right now is that I'm trying to decide on a new direction to take in my work and haven't had any inspiration yet. i may have to make that fountain that has been rolling around in my mind before I can change directions. I'm not a procrastinater-I was in 20s and early 30s and got serious about work-now I do the things I dislike first that leaves the best for last.
It works for me.
I have put off cleaning the oven-but I'm getting it done now.

I was ready to kick my studio time into high gear after the first of the year, but came down with a nasty bout of the flu. After a sick week, and a recovery week, thought I'd hit the ground running, but had gotten into the "Bowl Season" (football, not pottery) and had more I just had to watch. Then the Super Bowl. Familial, financial, and/or freaky stuff tripped me up. Of course, students came more prepared to visit than work and . . . (who else can I blame this on???)

Other than glazing and firing one load, my mind and heart have not been in the studio. I still have about six more unread books brought to me while I was sick--the stove needs a really good cleaning, laundry's done but . . . I'll get there, soon. Where is my muse?
