I've just bought an Olympic 1827 Torchbearer Kiln, natural gas. I have a pyrometer, no oxygen probe. I'm firing for the first time this weekend. I would like input on how to control temperature rise, atmosphere (when should it be redux, neutral, oxidation?) and how to control as much as possible with out instruments, how many and where to place the cone boats, and any advice on how to stack the shelves. I've read a few blogs and it looks like some people have success, and a lot do not. I've only fired a small electric kiln before, controlled by a kiln sitter.

Ruth I've never fired a gas kiln before so I can't offer any help from a practical standpoint, I'm certain some members of the community that do will chime in. Until then I can suggest you contact the kiln's manufacturer and see if their support department can offer some help. They do want you to succeed after all.
