I am a recent graduate from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a BFA in Ceramics and was looking for some help/suggestions with Grad Schools. I am a potter who primarily (pretty much only) woodfires. It has been hard finding schools that would be a good fit. Have thought about apprenticeships and residencies but am pretty set on trying to get into a Grad program. Right I am applying to Montana State, University of Iowa, and East Tennesse State. Any suggestions/info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

I would also consider Utah State with John Neely . They do a lot of wood. Also North Texas at Denton. They have a good program and do wood.
San Antonio UT has a good program and I think they have a blossoming ceramics program and I think I saw wood and salt kilns out on their kiln pad.
Montana State with Josh DeWeese is good too. ASU at Flaggstaff also has good wood program.

Utah is GREAT!!! One of the best for Wood firing! We have a few nice wood kilns here at Central Washington University and a small grad program close to Seattle. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I have been looking at Utah for quite some time. I have a friend out there in the MFA program, but they do not offer enough financial assistance for me to be able to afford their program. Stephen, I'm pretty sure Bede mentioned your name and program to me about a year ago not positive though I may have things mixed up. Thanks again.

They have a MS in Education which can focus in ceramics. but it isn't an MFA. I forgot about that. The kilns are awesome.

I am sure Bede did. Great location if you like hiking, skiing and out doors... Good facility. Nice train kiln and large wood soda cat at my studio which is open to grads.

Utah requires the GRE. App deadlines are coming up FAST. At CWU to be considered for a TA you would need to get stuff in by Feb 14th I think.

I worked with Josh Deweese when he was the director of the Archie Bray Foundation.[Summer residency] Great guy, great pots, great woodfirer, if that is even a word. Good recommendation from Marcia. When looking at grad schools, you want to pick the one with the best reputation, as this is what people look at when hirinr, not your undergrad degree.

I appreciate all the input Marcia, it has been very helpful. TJR thanks for giving me some more info on MSU and Josh. Stephen if I can get everything together in time I'll have an application heading your way.

Utah State! Check out the actual cost of tuition if you haven't already. It was really cheap when I was there. Plus they are (were when I was there) really good at getting in state tuition for grads. Check it out before you cross it off.
