Potters Council Question of the Week | #4 - How many days a week do you work in the Studio?

Hard to believe that we are already on week 4. This has been so much fun. I have really enjoyed reading everyone's answers. Last week opened my eyes to some different artists, and I hope it did the same for you...

Potters Council mission to meet the needs of studio potters and ceramic artists by providing a place for knowledge exchange... the Question of the Week is to promote the exchange of information--sometimes serious and sometimes just for fun. We thought doing a poll would be great way to see how often everyone can get into the studio...

My average is six days, but often turns into seven when there are deadlines or shows looming, or when my teaching schedule is very full. No I don't wish for more days, in fact I wish for more days off! Lately I've been forcing myself to take days off, and I'm discovering it doesn't make me less productive, because I come back to the studio with more energy.

My time in the studio making and glazing is shared with time on the road selling. I love what I do, but I don't allow it to define who I am. I am not my career...there are so many other things I want to do, too! Garden, exercise, go to movies, TRAVEL! I often have to put these on the back burner because I have too much to get done in the studio in such little time! So, while I would like more time to complete my work, I really want more time for my leisure activities!

I don't work all day every day I'm in the studio, but it feels right to have ongoing work in every stage of completion, such that something always needs some attention.

My studio is on my back porch, so I have access 24/7.
I like that I can throw at midnight if I've a mind, or trim pots in my PJs if that's when they're ready.
I live rurally, which cuts into my studio time in that going to town for groceries, hit the bank etc often must be done in the very middle of the day, so I have to plan ahead a little if I want to throw (I'm kind of muddy when I'm on the wheel).
I'm not in there all day 5 days a week. I usually have a burst of throwing, then a couple days of down time while ware dries, then glazing and firing before I get back to throwing.
I need to manage my time better for sure.

As a part-timer, I can usually get in a maximum of 3 days/evenings a week in the studio. I probably could get in there more if I were a selfish, self-centered ego-maniac, who didn't value time spent with my family. But, the guilt would overcome me and my attitude and work would become morose and tortured, possibly elevating my ceramics to the big "A", art. Hmmm, better stick with 3 days and a happy life.

I try for at least 5 days a week (hardly ever the same days each week) and four to six hours each session. The phone is my biggest problem, as I like to talk and a lot of my friends don't live locally. It would be great if I could organize my time better, but as that's not high on my priorities list, I'm more likely to just keep muddling.

I am similar to the Idaho potter. Genearlly in a good work week five days. They are never the same five days and I work early morning till well into the night somedays or just a few hours on others. I would like to figure out more consistency as well and better organization. I have stopped checking my web site and e-mails first thing in the morning since this really blows my schedule not to mention my karma!!

30 odd years ago I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life so now that I'm able, I'm officially in the studio 3 days a week for classes and sales. However, I find that I'm also here at least 2 more days so it's pretty much a Sun. thru Thurs. gig. In addition I also do a lot of computer stuff from home and also pack for shows from there so better add another day... If work must be dealt with (trimming...kiln check) it's not unusal to be 7 days but they're not full 8 hour shifts. Always moving forward at a steady pace.

Never enough time in the studio - my idea of a great day is telling everyone i am out for the day and sneaking off up to the studio to work uninterrupted. I keep try to resign at work but the boss (my husband!) wont let me!!!!

I don't spend nearly enough time in the studio.

I Always hope my work week is only six days...this summer has been extremely busy with orders, so it seems every day is a work day! HOWEVER.....I break my days up with Yoga class in the mornings or at 4:30...coffee with my husband in the morning on the deck and a break at 6:00 in the evening! Keep things in balance physically, emotionally, spiritually and you will be fine working all the time! Hug your family!

Pottery is a hobby for me. I work full time in a regular job - I am a self employed optician. My studio is attached to my house, so fortunately studio time is when I get inspired. Sometimes this is 7 days a week, sometimes none. The none is rare.
