What is your take on this next question ...

If you were a piece of pottery, would you be sculptural or functional?

Both. I think that clay affords more than just one purpose owing to its plastic character. I am a Libra, thus balance and more than one view is fun for me. I would be a sculptural vase with faces and forms from several views. The figures hold the flowers and fruits of the garden in the vase, and also provide a metaphor for the fruition of actions.

Ooohhhh.....I would definitely be sculptural. As a retired RN, I have been way to functional all of my life!

Well, I would have to be beautiful and functional - lovely to handle and look at and a joy to use. I would probably take myself to the desert island!

One of the things that gives me considerable pleasure in life is helping others... so I guess I'd be more happy as a functional piece.

I would be as beautiful as the most glorious vase from the Ming dynasty, so that those who get great pleasure from looking at me will wonder how the potter could have sculptured anything so beautiful.

And I would be as functional as the hands of that potter, so that those fortunate enough to watch me working at my wheel will be in awe of the beautiful, fluid dance of my two hands as I make this vase.

I would not care to define myself in this manner. It is sort of like asking for "race". Race should not matter. I'm ceramic, born of clay.

I would be a functional very sculptural teapot. I would also have an amazing intricate carved design. As a perfect plus unlike every single coffee pot we have owned my spout would not drip.

I would be functional, useful, because a functional piece can also be sculptural and stand on its own as an interesting, beautiful and thought-provoking statement.

In all of this, let's remember that sculpture has a function - to be seen, and sometimes to be enjoyed! And if it's ugly or degenerate (in whose eyes?) it's at the very least educational.

There is beauty in all things clay... so I'd choose to be a beautiful piece serving both form and function that would never get hidden away!

I would be a beautiful piece of functional stoneware, that mellows with age. Pottery can be sculptural and functional.

Without a doubt, I would be both for the sheer enjoyment of beauty and intrigue that comes with sculpture yet to be pratical in my function of everyday life.
