I finally have a little time to read the posts in the communities, and I love that there are so many talented people in the group. I notice that when I view profiles it helps to visualize and TRY to solve problems if I can get an idea of what the final products you make look like. Please take advantage of the gallery benefits of your Ceramics Arts Daily accounts. This would be of good use for people that don't have web pages, and at least Ceramics Arts Daily participants can view your work. Never know, might work like free advertising!OH! I FORGOT! Please let me know when your update your gallery!

Homemade Griffin Grip

I was just now looking at the griffin grips and would it be very difficult to make your own? It looks just like a few spirals, a top plate with some slots in it, and grabbers that slip into the bottom plate? Like I know I would have to think carefully about how they will attach, but I don't think it would be too hard to make?

Shaker-mixer.

Home-Depot's paint department uses some kind of shakers to mix the paint. I think it is more efficient than using a mixer that you dip into the glaze.
Anybody knows what would work like that shaker /how to make that kind of equipment?

Throwing Comfy

So, after a long search, I finally acquired a potter's wheel. It's nothing too fancy, as you can probably tell from the photo, it's a Brent ie. Not super powerful, by any means, but I feel it will suit my needs just fine, for the foreseeable future.
The seller, had very few hours on it, and the thing is practically new. I still need to buy a splashpan, yes Jim a splashpan, as the one I am using now, I borrowed from the Brent kickwheel I have in my classroom. They won't miss it during the summer right?

So I've finally got the key item for my studio, to go with the kiln I've had for the past several years, though it's still not hooked up yet.

The wheel does sit low, so I'll be looking into solutions for raising it. In the meantime, my wife and I just got a new couch in our office, so the old one got demoted, to my studio. That room also happens to be the safest place, in the event of a strong storm, so we put it there, to have some comfort, in case we need to hunker down a while. Coincidentally, it happens to be the perfect height for the wheel. So I guess I can throw in style, until I get a stool and some booties for the wheel lined up.

Wood Firing for Shino : Reduction phases

Greetings Kiln Masters !
I am about to fire a small (70 cu ft setting) anagama inspired tube kiln.
There seem to be as many different opinions as there are people but I thought I might as well pick the brains of you all who have lots more experience than I do.

Some details:
Shooting for cone 11/12 front 9/10 back
Mostly sheffield clays : Z, Wood Light, 42, T1, T3, 95400 white stoneware, some bMix. Some greenware so long campfire preheat.
4 day firing is the goal; with about 4 cords of mixed hardwoods.
Some unglazed in the front, shino, Mark's tenmoku and other miscellaneous glazes throughout.
Shino is "Gustin shino" : (not carbon trap.)

With the goal of maximizing the beauty of the shino:
Question 1) At what cone to do body reduction and for how long ?
Question 2) At what cone do you start glaze reduction and for how long?
Question 3) How long do you oxidize at the end?
Question 4) Do you down fire? and if so what 's your firing schedule for that?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. This crazy sport of wood firing seems more like alchemy than science so all opinions are welcome !
best
-tim.

Can you talk to me about plates?

Hi all,
I am trying to get 4 plates made for my niece's engagement party next weekend. I have thrown about 4, and I am terrible at throwing plates! They all come out different widths! I like to throw, and usually prefer throwing over hand building, but am I better off just hand building some plates and then putting a foot on them? Are there any big differences in the final product? Thanks much,

Proportions

As I develop as a potter, I'm becoming increasingly sensitive to proportion and flow in my work.

I'll often create a piece these days, and have an instantaneous, overwhelming sense of dissatisfaction with the form I just generated. Sometimes this leads to smashing things in a fit of pique... but other times I second-guess my own instincts.

Overall, I think it's a healthy process... but I'm not always able to completely quantify why I'm dissatisfied with a particular piece.

Anyhow, I may post an example here once in awhile, in hopes of an objective opinion or two.

Here's a garden lantern I assembled a couple days ago. Something about this piece strikes me as a bit off... but I can't quite pin down whether the stand is too narrow for the top elements, or or whether I don't like the depth and curve of the top piece.

Or... maybe I'm just a bit too twitchy these days.

Thoughts?
