Nearly every potter has probably put an old credit card to use in the studio as a flexible throwing rib. But that’s not the only way to repurpose your old credit cards.

In today’s bonus Monday video, potter Nan Rothwell, one of the honorable mentions in our recent D.I.Y. Tools video contest, shares some of other the credit card uses she has come up with in her pottery studio. -Jennifer Harnetty, editor

GREAT!! My fav use is to get scrambled eggs off my pan before I use the sponge when washing dishes. This takes it to a whole new level. can’t wait to try some of these ideas.!!

I couldn’t watch any video on my site so don’t know what ideas you showed. I cut small circles from my credit cards then place them on the bottoms of small pots when I’m trimming, my fingers go on the circles and it makes it easier to trim whle the pot is turning. I will check out your website for further ideas I may have missed.

I am wondering if two round disks cut out and placed on top of each other would give you the little mini (homemade) banding / lazy susan / turntable for trimming. I think it may work even better than one…….. maybe ???

Should have won the contest! Couldn’t actually want the video on the CAD site — totally pixilated. Had to watch it on Nan’s website, not a hardship at all since I got to view her beautiful work. Wonder what happened to the CAD version, though. Haven’t had a problem with any other video and no one else seems to have had a problem. Ah, computers!

I used to be able to se the videos. Now I can”t and it’s frustrating! Tried to follow instructions but can’t find the places it directs me to fix. Is there hope for us computer disabled? I’ve missed the last three! Lorraine

this isn’t the first time that the idea of using credit cards is shown on CAD, BUT, this is definitely the one of funniest clips.

Thanks for your comments. We had a great time making it! Alan was here filming our throwing DVD when the CAD contest came out. We were both a bit worn down by the project right then and ready for a fun afternoon off. It was easy since we had the lights, camera and all set up. Alan’s friend Sam’s voice-over really captured the late-night TV ads we were emulating.

13 comments so far and no one has added their own favorite credit card re-use idea? Well allow me to be the first! Great video, but not much good to a hand-builder like me. I cut the cards in half the long way, then use a pinking shears to cut the edges and/or ends of the credit cards, giving them nice jagged edges. I use these for score and slip tools in my classes. Easy to come by and easy to make, and an important tool for students to learn to use. Thanks!

Nan gave a great presentation at a conference I attended. The top to a plastic milk carton can be used like No. 1 in this video.
