Ceramic Sculpture Video: Ceramic Sculptor Gerit Grimm Discusses Her Wheel-Thrown and Handbuilt Figurative Sculpture

by Jennifer Harnetty Read Comments (29)

When most people think of wheel throwing, they think functional pottery, but there’s no rule saying the pottery wheel has to be used only for making pots. Many ceramic sculptors quite effectively use the wheel as a tool including German sculptor Gerit Grimm, an artist in residence at the Lux Center for the Arts in Lincoln, Nebraska. She makes wonderful figurative sculpture out of wheel thrown and assembled pieces.

In today’s video, which was sent to us by Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, a.k.a. NET TV (www.netnebraska.org/television/), Gerit discusses her work, her influences, and her techniques. - Jennifer Harnetty, editor.

I am also a German immigrant. I have always had an interest in pottery. I bought a potters wheel 35 years ago and didn’t start using it until 10 years ago. My husband set up astudio for me and I absolutely love it. Your work is an inspiration and is beautiful!!

I love Grit’s work - it’s delightful. I too do figurative sculpture - jester’s and renaissance-like figures, mostly upper torso, but in terracotta-type clays. I love finding their personalities and what they can communicate with their expressions.
When I taught high school clay classes, I would encourage the student’s to work with a feeling of emotion and self-expression. Many would add sculpting techniques of figures and characters.
This is the first time I’ve been so moved to log in to respond to an artist’s work. Obviously I must identify with it. I was really impressed with Grit’s work.

How exciting! I love the idea of combining sculptural hand built items and thrown pieces! What a great video…well done - loved the music and how it enhanced the work!

I really appreciate that during the demo, half of the clay on the wheel was not centred! (just the important part was centred!) Encourages me to relax and have more fun as a potter.

Grit’s life as a studio potter certainly gives me something to aspire to!

I love the way you speak about your work, the enthusiasm, the childish like innocence … Keep on dreaming your fantasy world !

  22. Lynn | January 12th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

I instructed my children, to write about personal experiences when asking for advise in a homework assignments. It is an art to write, as is creating sculpture. I see it is an extension of your personality that really makes the clay come alive. This has inspired me tremendously and I am going to be in my studio tomorrow. A place that has been avoided for nearly a year. Thank you

This is a fantastic video. I would love for her to make a video that I could buy. I just love her work and am so inspired by it. I can’t wait to get my hands in some clay and try to do my own version. Keep her here in this country so that maybe someday I could take a class from her.
